Enter the Expanded Multiverse of "Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse"

How do you follow up an Oscar®-winning animated feature which redefined what a CG-animated movie could look like, while introducing a new multicultural version of a classic Marvel superhero?
© Columbia Pictures
If you are part of the creative team at Sony Pictures Animation, you up the visual ante, take audiences to new places and offer surprising plot developments while never forgetting the emotional core of the story. Watch the trailer below:
“We took everything that we did in the first movie and cranked it to a whole new level,” says filmmaker Christopher Miller, one of the film’s writers and producers. “With this movie, we’re visiting different universes, and each universe has its own aesthetic and own artistic style. Each world is so different visually from the others, and the things that the people at Sony Pictures Animation and Imageworks have designed are limited by absolutely nothing. Anything you can imagine, paint and conceive, they can make an immersive 3D spectacle – and that’s often absolutely jaw-dropping.”
© Columbia Pictures
Producer Amy Pascal says, “This movie is a lot bigger and will have all the action that everyone’s looking for. But what I hope we’ll achieve is that the action sequences come out of character development and that you’re always telling a good story – we’ve been quite rigorous about that.”

“I think one point that comes across in the movie is that heroes exist in all cultures,” says producer Avi Arad.

Vision to the Power of Three

“What’s really inspiring is that each one of our new directors was able to bring something unique to the experience, a personal strength or viewpoint that was completely different from ours,” says filmmaker Phil Lord, also a writer and producer for the sequel.

“We’ve often joked about the fact that as a team of three directors, we each have our own individual superpowers,” says Joaquim Dos Santos, who directs the sequel with Kemp Powers and Justin K. Thompson. “Justin was the production designer on the first film, and has an amazing eye for design and knows how to push design especially when you’re visiting all these different worlds. Kemp is obviously an amazing writer. He has this fantastic backlog of work that has received every accolade and deserves even more because he’s an absolute virtuoso. My own background is as a story artist, so I am about telling stories through visual camera work. We are constantly checking each other’s work and showing each other what we are doing, and everybody has a say. It’s a very democratic process.”

A good old friend

“I hope audiences will feel like they’ve been reunited with a good friend,” says Peter Ramsey, one of the directors of the first film and now an executive producer for the sequel. “We want them to hold on tight as Miles goes through some really tricky and treacherous times. Most of all, I hope his journey comes across as powerfully and emotionally strong as it did in the original movie.”

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is coming exclusively to theaters on May 31, 2023, distributed by Columbia Pictures Philippines.

DC League of Super-Pets movie review

Heroic, cuddly and furry friends are up to save the world in the family film DC League of Super-Pets that will be in theaters today. Warner Bros Pictures and DC Comics brought our fur-riends to the big screen to showcase their superpowers and show us how they treasure their master's care and reciprocate their love unconditionally.

In this film, we are taken back to the cute origins of Krypto (Dwayne Johnson) and his loyalty to Super-Man / Kal-El / Clark Kent. Living the lifestyle of the super dog in town, Clark felt that he could endanger his love to Krypto so he went to a nearby pet shop to find his dog a companion while he is with Lois. There Krypto meets pets for adoption of unlikely blend, Ace the Hound (Kevin Hart), Merton the Turtle (Natasha Lyonne), PB the Pig (Vanessa Bayer) and Chip the Squirrel (Diego Luna). An event that also involved the guinea pig Lulu (Kate McKinnon), Lex Luthor and the Justice League has turned Krypto's new found friends into unexpected team of animal heroes that will later on save the world.

I personally recommend parents to bring their kids to see DC League of Super Pets for your quality time. Aside from seeing the Justice League and these fur friends save the world from evil, the movie is a lot of fun and touch. There are quite a number of familiar banters that are excessively funny and unimaginable to be included in this movie but does the work well.

It also encourages the kids to be good owners of animals and to be responsible to their friends. It's an overall enjoyable movie that kids and parents will both love.

DC League of Super-Pets also gives us two end-credits scenes so stay tuned until the end. Also features the voices of John Krasinski, Keanu Reeves, Olivia Wilde and more. Directed by Jared Stern and Sam Levine, distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures.

Growing up is a beast in Turning Red

Disney and Pixar won't leave us without a movie this 2021. They'd just released a teaser trailer of a new animated movie that talks about teenage life in Turning Red. But the catch is that "growing up is a beast."
The story is about Meilin Lee, an average Asian student and very human when calm and then transforms as a red panda while being stressed or when she's having a panic attack. Watch the trailer below.

For now, her mother only knows her secret. What would be the consequences when everybody in school and her community finds out? Aside from the battles in life that's already scary, being an animal as an alter ego would be another disaster.

The film is the latest from Domee Shi, who won the Oscar for Best Animated Short Film in 2018 with her Pixar-backed “Bao.” Coming to theaters in March 2022.

MOVIE REVIEW - TOM AND JERRY (2021)

The long-time cat and mouse battle gets their first live action movie with the same title, Tom and Jerry. Joined by Chloe Grace Moretz, Michael Pena, Ken Jeong, Jordan Bolger, Pallavi Sharta, Colin Jost, Patsy Ferran and Rob Delaney. Tom and Jerry is now streaming via HBO GO.

As they get on the New York city life for the first time, Tom and Jerry continues their battle for ages to survive. They encounter the Royal Gate Hotel where Kayla (Moretz) applies as a temporary event coordinator after tricking a more qualified applicant. The said event was a high-profile wedding of Preeta (Sharta) and Ben (Jost) and it has to be ensured that nothing bad will happen. But when there's a cat and mouse situation, you bet that something bad will definitely happen.

Tom and Jerry

Chloe Grace Moretz and Michael Pena

Tom and Jerry is still a good family cartoon and did not miss their usual funny antics. You might have missed their violent attacks that kids will surely laugh about it but remind them to not do them at home. Glad that there's no actual animal casting here because they're all animated. From dogs, to cats, to mouse, to pigeons and even elephants. Combining all of them, even if Tom and Jerry does not speak, if they're there, there is definitely a disaster. They also used some references too like the one below from Batman. There's one from the Matrix and more.

Directed by Tim Story, based on the characters of William Hanna and Joseph Barbera. Distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures.

The story behind hit song "DOTA o Ako" celebrates 10th year anniversary

I have seen the phrase "DOTA o ako" in my friends' statuses and I didn't realize it was already 10 years ago when it came out. The online game has made many relationships crazy because of attention it receives from the gaming community. I also did not know that there's actually a song and music video released during that era until Netlix reminded us about it.

The music video sequel, “DOTA At Ako” features Aikee and Vanessa 10 years later, taking their relationship (and their relationship with DOTA) to a whole new level. The duo also shares more of their thoughts on the song.

“To be honest, I can’t even imagine that my song 10 years ago ay magkakaroon ng sequel at hindi lang basta sequel bagkus sequel ito with Netflix,” says Aikee. “Kaya sobrang saya po ng puso ko dahil nabigyan ulit ng chance ang awiting tumatak sa tao isang dekada na ang nakalipas.”

“I was so excited in general to be working with Aikee again cause it has really been a long time since our collaboration -- 10 years ago to be exact. We've gotten so busy individually with our careers so it was definitely time to catch up and reminisce in a super memorable and major way!” adds Vanessa. “So when I got the call to do a remake I immediately canceled my schedule and confirmed! I knew I was gonna do it! I had to do it for sure! And especially ecstatic to do the sequel with Netflix because I am OBSESSED!”

True to the iconic original music video, the sequel from Netflix features an all-new song done in a cheesy, Pinoy videoke style that will have every DOTA fan singing along.

When asked about what they’re most excited for DOTA fans to see, Aikee shares, “Sa song kasi ng ‘DOTA o Ako,’ hindi nasagot kung ano nga ba ang pinili ko. Dito kasi ay masasagot ko na ang tanong na nakalutang ng sampung taon. At gusto kong makita nila kung paano ako lumipad, hahaha!”

“I'm really most excited for them to see the ending, who we ended up with in the music video,” continues Vanessa. “And I'm especially excited for them to see the outcome because we had an AWESOME TEAM that helped remake this video and take it to that ultimate next level!”

Vanessa also hopes that DOTA fans love the sequel and the Netflix Original Anime series, saying, “Please watch our ‘DOTA o Ako’ sequel! Because it's genuinely for the fans who really loved the song and continue to support and listen to it for 10 years now. I can't even believe it's been that long! So this is our thank you to everyone who supported us and definitely watch the Netflix series because for sure all you DOTA fans will love it!”

DOTA Dragon's Blood is now streaming on Netflix. Watch the trailer here:

A SHAUN THE SHEEP MOVIE: FARMAGEDDON - movie review

This is the first time that I saw a Shaun the Sheep production and I can recommend it for you to watch it with your kids. It's 97% FRESH on Rotten Tomatoes so you'll have fun watching it.
Farmageddon has a familiar plot but I won't spoil it for you to watch with your kids. Also, the alien is so cute that I wish it could have a merchandise available.
I admire the clay-animation that the producers gave a lot of effort to. I really had no idea that this was close to a Mr. Bean show which has very minimal dialogues but the effects and visuals are fit for your kids to enjoy. The soundtrack also rocks and don't miss an mid-credits scene.

A Shawn the Sheep Movie: Farmageddon is showing on December 4, from Cartoon Network.

THE GRINCH movie review

Illumination's The Grinch provides a heartwarming story on how you will look at Christmas again.
With the amazing animation of Dr. Seuss' classic, The Grinch submits great visual and songs that give a festive glow on each child's faces and to their parents. A perfect holiday movie that you will love and inspire you on why Christmas has the way to give everyone joy.
Dr. Seuss also gave Mr. Grinch (voiced by Benedict Cumberbatch) a backstory on why he hated Christmas so much and developed a sequence to understand him. He made the Grinch a lovable character with shortcomings and issues but deep inside has a pure heart.
Watch The Grinch only in cinemas this November 28. Directed by Ron Howard under Illumination.

A very familiar poster for Teen Titans

Just LOL. That poster seem so familiar.
Warner Bros. released the teaser poster for Teen Titans Go to the Movies which will be in theaters, July 26.

“Teen Titans GO! to the Movies” finds our egocentric, wildly satirical Super Heroes in their first feature film extravaganza—a fresh, gleefully clever, kid-appropriately crass and tongue-in-cheek play on the superhero genre, complete with musical numbers.

It seems to the Teens that all the major superheroes out there are starring in their own movies—everyone but the Teen Titans, that is! But de facto leader Robin is determined to remedy the situation, and be seen as a star instead of a sidekick. If only they could get the hottest Hollywood film director to notice them. With a few madcap ideas and a song in their heart, the Teen Titans head to Tinsel Town, certain to pull off their dream. But when the group is radically misdirected by a seriously Super-Villain and his maniacal plan to take over the Earth, things really go awry. The team finds their friendship and their fighting spirit failing, putting the very fate of the Teen Titans themselves on the line!

Will Arnett (“The LEGO® Batman Movie”) and Kristen Bell (“Frozen”) lend their voices to the first-ever big-screen version of DC Entertainment and Cartoon Network’s animated TV show, which also stars Greg Cipes (TV’s “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles”) as Beast Boy, Scott Menville (TV’s “Spider-Man”) as Robin, Khary Payton (“The Walking Dead”) as Cyborg, Tara Strong (the “My Little Pony” franchise) as Raven, and Hynden Walch (TV’s “Adventure Time with Finn & Jake”) as Starfire, reprising their roles from the series.

The film is being directed by Aaron Horvath and Peter Rida Michail, from a screenplay by Michael Jelenic and Horvath, based on characters from DC. Michail, Will Arnett, Jed Weitzman, and Peggy Regan are producing, with Sam Register, Jelenic, and Horvath serving as executive producers. Apart from Arnett and Weitzman, all are “Teen Titans GO!” series contributors.

“Teen Titans GO! to the Movies” is distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.

FERDINAND movie review

Though it's the Year of the Dog, FERDINAND the Gentle Bull is the most adorable animal to open 2018. Bring your kids to this funny and family-friendly animated feature that will help them understand that it is not what your environment perceive you to be but it is really what you exude from the inside.
I never knew that John Cena's voice would be as gentle as Ferdinand the bull as it made him perfect to voice out the character. The movie includes a lot of funny moments that the whole family would enjoy. It would take you to a journey of the individual and put you to an emotional roller coaster that is light to the heart.

This is not a boring movie, actually. Let out the child in you and cherish every moment while watching it. I enjoyed most the dance-off between the horses and the bulls that is totally hilarious. Some scenes may be predictable but overall, bringing the kids to watch it is worth it. Don't forget to stay a little longer during the credits as it may hint for a part 2, I hope.
Ferdinand is now showing in cinemas, distributed by 20th Century Fox (Philippines).

Pixar's Coco is a tear-jerker

When you enjoy good graphics mixed with some adventure and good laughs, you always forget that Disney Pixar movies will hit you hard and unexpectedly shed a tear. That's what Coco delivered and I am happy that Pixar is back with its trademark in story telling.
Coco's family-oriented theme is no different from the Filipino culture even it is set in Mexico. Strong family ties, love for one another and sometimes holding grudges that would go as far as death is very much familiar to two countries that patronize telenovelas as past time. But most importantly, the Day of the Dead connects all of us in remembering our ancestors and all the good things they've spent while they were alive.

The story really hit me as I remember my grandmother with Mama Coco. I was really close to her and really felt sad about what happened to her by the end of the movie. But I am also happy that she was able to reunite with her parents in the afterlife. For now, I'm worried where to get my ancestors' photos for the ofrenda so we can remember them every year. But they are in my prayers every day.
Coco is a colorful musical filled with heart and you will definitely remember.

DESPICABLE ME 3 movie review

What's not to love about Despicable Me 3? The minions, Lucy and the girls are with Gru redefine his nature as a true villain as he traces his roots meeting the long lost twin brother Dru. Together they will bring down a heist caused by an 80s bad boy Balthazar Bratt. Despicable Me 3 opens in theaters June 14.
Prepare for dated laugh as it was more humorous for the adults than for the kids. Watching it last night had more appeal to the adults with the 80s-themed music and inserts that will transport you through time. Balthazar Bratt (Trey Parker) makes your imaginations into reality with all the gigantic robots that try to destroy entire cities with its laser eyebeams -- just like in the old Japanese shows.
Margo is probably going through puberty. Agnes still dreams of unicorns are true and her adorable cheeks still captures the hearts of every one. Edith is somewhere in between that will support any of her sisters but still has a huge chunk of childhood in her. Good that there's Lucy to watch over them, coping with the whole parenting thing that relates to all first time mothers undergoing the process.

Of couse, we don't forget he minions now led by a new character, Mel, who initiated a union against Gru as they missed being bad and helping Gru in heists. The potatoes found themselves in new experiences and soon they'll discover they can survive without a boss but still returns to him because they just missed him.
Gru and Dru finding each other will just connect it to the feels of having a sibling. An adjustment period was just too short since they still had their villainous blood in them that had bonded them right there and then. Somehow the movie fails to give emotional connection on this aspect as you can only tune in to resolving the problem caused by Balthazar.
