Critically-acclaimed Tenor Arthur Espiritu all set for One Night Only concert on April 2 at Miranila

A welcome-home concert for this “rare spinto-tenor in the tradition of a Pavarotti... a well-trained tenor (with) no fear of heights”
The MiraNila Heritage House & Library in partnership with Leon Gallery and Gallery MiraNila of The Blue Leaf with support from the Bizu Groupe proudly presents “Tenor Arthur Espiritu Welcome-home Concert Amid Critical Acclaim in Europe” on Wednesday, April 2, 2025 at 6:30 p.m. at the Main Hall of MiraNila.
Arthur Espiritu
Enter the thrilling world of Filipino-American tenor Arthur Espiritu to witness his “magnificent vocal power” and “effortlessness and radiance.”

He returns from European cities after playing leading roles in opera houses and concert halls.

MiraNila promises a magical experience and an exploration of the power of love and the drama of opera with pieces by Gabriel Fauré, Franz Lehar, Giacomo Puccini, Charles Gounod, Richard Strauss, Andrew Lloyd Weber and Francesco Sartori.

In an interview with Michael Ching, Mr. Espiritu recalls, “I started my career in Europe... I had no trouble landing leading European-type roles." Still, he had to prove himself by working harder as he was not as tall as the locals. "In some ways,” he added, “it was easier for female performers."

His advice to younger talents? “Work really, really hard at your artistry, put yourself into that character... take that extra step with a chip on your shoulder (that is how I built my career) and leave the audience to see you as an Asian-American doing that role.”

Tenor Arthur Espiritu was born in Morong, Rizal, Philippines.

He migrated to the United States with his parents in his teens and finished with an Artist Diploma in Music Performance at the Oberlin College Conservatory of Music. He won the La Scala award at the Belvedere Competition in 2007 and the distinguished George London Award in 2009.

Mr. Espiritu has portrayed numerous leading roles in North America, Europe, and Asia, with early career highlights that include his very first Ferrando in Michael Hampe’s staging of Mozart’s Cosi fan tutte in the Teatro alla Scala, the role of Tamino in Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte with the Israeli Opera Tel-Aviv, and the role of Publio in Mozart’s early work, Il sogno di Scipione, with the former Gotham Chamber Opera, New York.

His recent roles include Roberto of Leicester in Donizetti’s Maria Stuarda in the Staatstheater am Gärtnerplatz (the Munich opera house); Edgardo in Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor in the Daegu International Opera Festival, South Korea; Gualtiero in Bellini’s Il Pirata; Alfredo in Verdi’s La Traviata; Cassio in Verdi’s Otello; Rodolfo in Puccini’s La Boheme; and Don Ramiro in Rossini’s La Cenerentola, in Munich’s Staatstheater am Gärtnerplatz. His opera commitments continue unabated in 2025. Read more about him at: https://www.arthurespiritutenor.com/

Performing with Mr. Espiritu is the multi-awarded soprano Jade Riccio. Virtuoso pianist Mariel Ilusorio will accompany them on MiraNila’s newly restored 1904 Steinway, considered rare in the Steinway & Sons catalog.
Mariel Ilusorio, pianist

Jade Riccio, soprano
Soprano Jade Riccio, an Italian-Filipina who hails from Palawan, earned a slot in the 2024 Person to Watch: Women Who Made It in Music. She was the sole recipient of the 37th Aliw Awards 2024 Hall of Fame from which she won five consecutive awards, including Best Classical Performer in 2018 and 2020 and Best Female Crossover Performer in 2019 and 2022. She earlier received highest recognitions during vocal competitions at the National Music Competition for Young Artists (NAMCYA) in 2014 and the Jovita Fuentes Vocal Competition in 2015. As one of the most sought-after celebrity vocal coaches to some of Asia’s most shining stars, Ms. Riccio is also the CEO, creative producer, and chairperson of a music company called Riccio Music and Artistry (RMA) Studio Academy, a creative hub she founded during the pandemic, which now nurtures nearly 400 students from around the world.

Pianist Mariel Ilusorio studied at the Juilliard School of Music in New York, Oberlin Conservatory of Music in Ohio, and the State College of Music and Theater Hanover (now Hanover University of Music, Drama and Media) in Lower Saxony, Germany. Under the tutelage of Stella Brimo, she won top prizes in Philippine piano competitions before continuing her studies overseas. After performing in the U.S., Germany, France, Switzerland, Italy, South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Indonesia and having lived twenty-six years in the U.S., Germany, and South Africa, she has made the Philippines her home. She continues performing and now organizes concerts and recitals. She is also in the faculty of the UST Conservatory of Music, St. Scholastica's College of Music, the Philippine High School for the Arts, and the Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila.

This April, the public gets the chance to hear these three outstanding performers in an environment conducive to master-level performances. In the once bucolic environs of Cubao, this four-story 1929 heritage house boasts a living room and library with near perfect acoustics. With its charming gardens and chapel, the grounds are likewise not to be missed.

Book your tickets now and appreciate why critics continue to laud Mr. Espiritu’s performances. With this brief interlude to visit family in the Philippines, his opera engagements in Europe remain steady. Here are some reviews:

—Das Opernglas
Arthur Espiritu as Roméo . . . interpreted his leading role with a heroic tenor. Powerful and musically secure in all registers, he steered timelessly, singing his melodious tenor voice and making his role debut through the demanding role. The soft tones are touching.

—Angus McPherson of Limelight Magazine
Filipino-American tenor Arthur Espiritu as the poet Rodolfo, whose sound is exquisitely polished and contained—almost delicate—with a fine, burnished sheen. Espiritu’s voice warms in Che Gelida Manina as he sensitively crafts the swells and diminuendos.

—Detlef Obens of Opernmagazin Das Opern & Kulturmagazin
As one of the rare Spinto-tenors in the tradition of a Pavarotti, which combine safe heights with lyrical melt and great virtuosity, he travels at large houses worldwide. Sparks spark in the duets of the two.

—Peter Skorepa of OnlineMERKER
Arthur Espiritu achieved great success with his Duke, who also had an impeccable voice. With his well-trained tenor and no fear of heights, he showed how to musically implement the specifications of Leggerezza.

—Florian Krenstetter of The Kronen Zeitung

Arthur Espiritu convinces with a powerful sensitive implementation in the title role. His Don Carlo is characterized by emotions, suffering and hopelessness, to which he submits little rebelliously. His tenor follows effortlessly in all layers and warms with full bright timbre.
—Dr. Andreas Ströbl of Klassik begeistert - Der Opernfreund
The Filipino-American tenor Arthur Espiritu makes this feeling at the mercy of his own doubts and desires come alive with his magnificent vocal power and fantastic height confidence. He crowns this production with top performances in singing and acting, for which he repeatedly receives applause from the audience.

—Alan Neilson of @operawire.com
The tenor Arthur Espiritu... has a sweet timbre and he sings with a lilting Italianate intonation, ideal for the bel canto repertoire, which his aria “Ah! Rimiro il bel sembiante” beautifully confirmed, by highlighting his natural lyricism. He performed exceptionally well in the numerous interactive recitative passages and ensembles.

—Norbert Pabelick of Der Opernfreund
Filipino-American opera singer Arthur Espiritu, who embodied the title part with wonderful Italianita. He is an extremely beautiful, sympathetic and high-altitude Rudolfo, who does not need to fear the comparison with stars... His high C in the aria hit “Che gelida manina” is of an effortlessness and radiance that require admiration. (December 24, 2024)

A Masterpiece on a Masterpiece: LG TVs Amplify the Viewing Experience with Advanced Display Technology at Art Fair Philippines 2025

LG Electronics, a proud exhibit partner, brought a fresh perspective to Art Fair Philippines 2025 with its cutting-edge TV displays. As one of the country’s premier art events, the fair continued to push creative boundaries in its new home at Ayala Triangle in Makati City last February 21-23, 2025. It offered an even more immersive space where art and technology merged, amplifying the creative storytelling of the best Philippine contemporary arts.
Beyond Displays: A Tech-Infused Art Experience
The stunning LG OLED C4 captivated art enthusiasts with its vibrant welcoming display upon entrance, while the LG StanbyME displayed interactive maps and essential event details, which served as a guide for a smooth and enriching journey through the fair.
At the heart of the tour was the TLYR Collective Gallery, a dynamic group of creatives redefining contemporary art by merging technology, culture, and creativity. From curating blockchain-based art to pioneering new approaches that seamlessly integrate digital and traditional mediums, they continue to push artistic boundaries. Artworks by dedMan, Ericson Calibo, James Fowler, and other visionary artists were brought to life on LG’s advanced OLED G4 and C4 screens, ensuring unmatched clarity, precision, and depth.

Their works embody a deep contemplation on life, merging technology and artistic expression to craft thought-provoking pieces. Through the fusion of reality and abstraction, a distinct visual language took shape, delving into personal conflicts and environmental observations. The theme of construction and decay evoked both fragility and transformation, layering each piece with profound meaning—an approach that LG OLED’s technology captured with exceptional detail and nuance.
Partnering with TLYR Collective this year, LG took digital and contemporary art appreciation to the next level, elevating each masterpiece with exceptional depth and vibrancy through its industry-leading OLED displays. The LG OLED C4, powered by the α9 AI Processor Gen7, refined every detail with transformative yet life-like precision, while AI Brightness Control adapted to the ambient lighting of the venue, ensuring crisp and clear visuals. Its Brightness Booster enhanced clarity with an improved Light Boosting Algorithm, and with self-lit OLED 4K technology, the colors appeared richer and more vibrant, staying true to the artist’s vision.

Meanwhile, the LG OLED G4, featuring a sleek One Wall Design, seamlessly integrated into the gallery space, putting the focus solely on the art. Equipped with the α11 AI Processor, AI Noise Reduction, and AI Super Resolution, it fine-tunes resolution which delivers breathtaking clarity. Its enhanced Light Boosting Algorithm and Light Control Architecture elevated the brightness of the artwork by 150% and made every detail stand out.
More LG TVs were positioned across key areas in Tower 1 and Tower 2, displaying an interactive map and providing essential event information to enhance the visitor experience.

LG provided two LG OLED Posé units for The Talks Hall, supporting Art Fair Philippines' mission to engage a wider audience in contemporary art through meaningful discussions. With its soft, rounded edges and muted beige fabric finish, Posé seamlessly blended into the space, creating an inviting setting for insightful conversations. Beyond a display, it transformed into an elegant frame, showcasing curated visuals that enriched the experience. Its self-lit OLED technology with Brightness Booster ensured vivid colors and fine details, enhancing presentations by esteemed speakers. Among the notable speakers were Dir. Jeremy Barns of the National Museum of the Philippines, who shared insights on Sustaining Heritage and Contemporary Legacies: A National Museum Perspective, and Ambeth Ocampo, who explored the life and work of Fernando Zóbel through archival images, offering a deeper understanding of the artist-patron’s intellectual curiosity and artistic journey.
Committed to expanding artistic engagement, Art Fair Philippines co-founders Trickie Colayco-Lopa, Lisa Ongpin-Periquet, and Geraldine “Dindin” Araneta continuously reimagine the fair, introducing fresh and innovative experiences each year. More than just a platform for contemporary art, their vision fosters meaningful connections between artists who are new to the scene and those with established careers. This year, the fair takes a broader scope by welcoming not only local artists but also international artists and galleries, creating a richer exchange of ideas and perspectives. Through thoughtful curation and dynamic collaborations, Art Fair Philippines continues to evolve, strengthening its role as a vital space for artistic dialogue and cultural appreciation.
Aligning with this vision, LG Philippines partners with Art Fair Philippines 2025 to further enrich artistic engagement and drive the evolution of art. "Seeing technology seamlessly complement artistic expression reaffirms our belief that innovation isn’t just about advancement—it’s about elevating experiences," said Mr. Nakhyun Seong, LG Philippines Managing Director. "We at LG Philippines are truly honored to be this year’s exhibit partner at Art Fair Philippines 2025. We’re grateful for the opportunity to empower artists, ensuring their vision is not only seen but truly felt—bringing greater depth, clarity, and emotion to every piece, and allowing audiences to connect with art in more meaningful ways."
Adding to the celebration of creativity, Jaime Gusto Zobel de Ayala, Chairman of Ayala Corporation, was also seen posing alongside the stunning LG OLED display.

As the world’s No.1 OLED TV brand for nearly 12 consecutive years, LG ensures that each masterpiece is displayed with unmatched depth, color accuracy, and brilliance—a masterpiece presented on a masterpiece, perfected by time-honed expertise. With a deep commitment to the arts, LG continues to empower creativity and innovation, providing advanced display technology that brings artistic visions to life. PILATO - a new musical, takes stage this April at PETA

ANO BA ANG KATOTOHANAN: An all-original Filipino musical all set to unveil a new perspective on the greatest story ever told

In an era where misinformation spreads faster than light and truth seems to wear many faces, the question asked over 2,000 years ago by one of the most divisive persons in history still reverberates with haunting relevance: “Ano ba ang katotohanan?” This serves as the heartbeat of Pilato, an all-original Filipino musical set to captivate audiences this April at the PETA Theater Center.

With its daring perspective and poignant relevance, the production revisits the so-called “greatest story ever told”--the trial and crucifixion of Jesus Christ--through the eyes of Pontius Pilate, a man caught at the crossroads of power, faith, and duty.

Jerome Ferguson (Pilato) and Onyl Torres (Josepo)

The musical traces Pilato’s journey from his early ambitions in Rome to his appointment as prefect of Judea, a province brimming with religious and political unrest. There, Pilato’s every decision is scrutinized by a constellation of figures: the enigmatic historiographer, Josepo; the calculating high priest, Caiaphas; his wise and foreboding wife, Procla; and Hesus, a mysterious and magnetic presence rumored to be the King of the Jews.

Jerome Ferguson (Pilato), Jeremy Manite (Caiaphas), and Noel Rayos (Hesus)

In a time when Holy Week invites reflection and as the country approaches the critical 2025 elections, Pilato emerges as a vital meditation on truth in all its complexity.

Through haunting melodies and powerful storytelling, it challenges us to confront the choices we make as individuals and as a society.

“Information comes to us in countless forms and modes. But how do we sift through the chaos to uncover the truth? Would we even recognize the truth if we meet it face-to-face?” shares writer-director Eldrin Veloso. “Essentially, that is what the play hopes to put out there--a journey that dares to unravel the mystery of truth’s many faces. With our society on the brink of a post-truth era, I believe this is a story that demands to be told, now more than ever.”

With a cast of seasoned musical theater artists and gifted newcomers, Pilato offers an emotional and intellectual journey unlike any other. It is a poignant reminder that even after two millennia, the search for truth remains both our greatest burden and our ultimate salvation.

This marks the inaugural theatrical venture of The Corner Studio, a creative agency renowned for weaving compelling narratives through its expertise in branding, production, marketing, and design. Now, it steps boldly onto the stage, bringing its storytelling vision to life in a new dimension.

Don’t miss Pilato on April 4 at 8pm for its world premiere and on April 5, 6, 11, 12 and 13 at 3pm and 8pm, at the PETA Theater Center.

Tickets are now available at pilato.helixpay.com.

FEU Theater Guild brings Niyebe: Isang Musikal

The Far Eastern University Theater Guild (FTG) stages another Gabriel Garcia-Marquez short story as an experimental play for the opening of its 91st season.
NIYEBE: ISANG MUSIKAL is a groundbreaking production, featuring music and musical direction by Vince Lim, assisted by Jesus Singh III (IAS ‘17) for additional guidance and vocal coaching, choreography by Carlon Matobato, and choreography, adaptation, lyrics, and direction by Dudz Teraña, is set to captivate audiences from February 12 to March 27, 2025.
Against the backdrop of Europe's harsh winter, Niyebe: Isang Musikal tells the tragic story of newlyweds Billy Sanchez and Nena Deconte, whose honeymoon turns into a nightmare. A small scrape on Nena's finger leads to death! Stranded in a foreign land, Billy grapples with solitude, grief, and despair, forced to confront profound questions about existence, purpose, and identity in the aftermath of his wife’s sudden death. All this while, he battles the relentless bureaucracy that ultimately denies him the chance to see his wife one last time.
The musical production features a dynamic cast with Billy Sanchez played by RB Pascua (IAS ‘25) and Dave Bambang (IARFA ‘29), Nena Deconte by Kesiah Eunice Aritao (IAS ‘25) and Brigitta Claire Marilla (IAS ‘25), and the Narrator by Aaron Bayani (FIT‘25).

Also featured is a dynamic ensemble cast, whose collective talent and synergy will enhance the depth and vibrancy of the musical's narrative and performances.
Director and writer Dudz Teraña masterfully adapts García Márquez's story into a compelling theatrical experience that fuses music, movement, and rich storytelling. "Niyebe isn’t just a love story; it’s a reflection of how the fragility of happiness and loss can spiral into a deep existential crisis," says Teraña. "Reimagined as an experimental play, it employs a unique narrative style while delving into societal issues such as class disparity, which inspired García Márquez’s original work. Much like his other works, it speaks on existentialism, the questioning of one’s purpose after a sudden loss, and the wanting of escapism triggered by this loss."

The show's brilliance lies not only in its powerful performances but also in the dedicated work of its creative and production team. From the seamless execution by Stage Manager Maria Ysabel Delos Reyes (IAS ‘27) to the logistical coordination of Production Manager Janah Gervacio (IHSN ‘26), and House Manager Hans Fernandez, every aspect of the show is meticulously managed. The production’s aesthetic vision is brought to life by Production Design Head Kirstan Orbegoso (IAS ‘28) and Costume Designer Margarita Barrameda (IAS ‘26), and the technical team led by Technical Head Kristian Samson (IAS ‘26), with lighting design by Arvin Javier (IAS ‘28), sound by Gab Lazaro (FIT ‘27), and video projections by Shawn Tarala (IAS ‘27). Offstage, the show is supported by Marketing Relations Head Cassandra Herilla (IAS ‘27), Creative Head Julia Nicole Ramas (FIT ‘27), Multimedia Heads Davewyn Macawile (IAS ‘25) and Millicent Roxas (IAS ‘25), Media Relations Head Heleina Li (IAS ‘27), Collaborative Relations Head Irish Oliveros (IAS ‘28), and Social Media Manager Renz Dotillos (IAS ‘26), ensuring that Niyebe resonates with audiences both on and off the stage.

With a unique blend of captivating performances, evocative music, and innovative design, Niyebe is more than just a musical— it’s a deeply moving exploration of love and loss.

NIYEBE: ISANG MUSIKAL runs at the FEU Center for the Arts Studio on the following dates:
