A Legend Reborn: National Artists’ Rock Opera Ballet “Tales of the Manuvu” Returns to the Stage this 2026

Alice Reyes Dance Philippines (ARDP),
in collaboration with the University of the Philippines, the National Commission for Culture and the Arts, and the Cultural Center of the Philippines, with the generous support of the Office of Senator Pia Cayetano, is proud to announce the 2026 restaging of Tales of the Manuvu. Premiered in 1977, this production is the first Filipino rock opera ballet, masterfully weaving indigenous mythology with the vibrant energy of rock and pop music.

The 2026 season begins with performances at the University Theater, UP Diliman, on February 27–28, followed by a strictly limited run at the Proscenium Theater in Rockwell, Makati, on March 28–29.

A Historic Artistic Collaboration
This masterpiece was born from the creative synergy of legendary Filipino artists. National Artist Alice Reyes provided the visionary direction and choreography, while National Artist Bienvenido Lumbera penned the libretto. Crucial to its iconic sound was the music composed by OPM icon Dero Pedero, with additional music by the rock band Afterbirth. The original production also featured stars of the Philippine theater and music scene, including Boy Camara, Anthony Castelo, Haji Alejandro, Celeste Legaspi, and the debut of newfound talent, Leah Navarro.

Reflecting on the production’s origins, National Artist Alice Reyes notes:

“In 1976, Bien Lumbera and I were both delighted by E. Arsenio Manuel's folk tales... We agreed that the tales could be rich material for a rock-opera ballet, a dance concept still in its nascent state in the Philippines. We opened on February 25, 1977, to a packed house in the CCP and never looked back.

Forty-nine years later—and almost to the day—Tales of the Manuvu makes a strong comeback... Although dance is about change and movement, ARDP puts value and currency in proven works. It continues to foster a collaborative environment for Filipino artists—all in a mission to keep dance as an art form that provokes, excites, and engages the national spirit and consciousness.”

The 2026 Restaging
The 2026 production is restaged by ARDP Ballet Master Lester Reguindin. This iteration features new set and costume designs by award-winning director and designer Loy Arcenas, and lighting design by Barbara Tan-Tiongco.

A Stellar Cast of Voices and Movement
The production features a powerhouse ensemble of singers and dancers, continuing the tradition of featuring live vocalists and a rock band alongside technical brilliance. With a rotating cast, the production offers a unique experience at every performance.

Audiences are invited to catch the different artistic interpretations of both the singers and dancers.

MGA KUWENTO NI JUAN TAMAD to premiere on November 10

MGA KUWENTO NI JUAN TAMAD is the latest addition to Alice Reyes Dance Philippines' expansive repertoire of Filipino works, this time designed specifically for Children's Dance Theater.
Renzen Arboleda as Juan Tamad
This new offering marks a significant milestone for one of ARDP’s talented choreographers, Erl Sorilla, who has crafted both the book and his first full-length choreography.

The production is brought to life with a captivating musical score by award-winning singer-songwriter Toto Sorioso, and magical sets and costumes designed by the renowned Filipino Director and Broadway Designer, Loy Arcenas.

Under the mentorship of National Artist for Dance, Alice Reyes, and ARDP Artistic Director, Ronelson Yadao, this production promises to be a magical experience for young audiences.

The story follows the adventures of Juan Tamad, the misunderstood boy in town, and his loyal monkey companion, Matsing. Aided by Juan’s unique ability to converse with animals and his innate love for nature, they set out to find the village’s most prized treasure, the fruit of all their hard-work and labor stolen by the greedy ‘Buwaya,’ the ‘Gintong Niyog.’ A challenge he must complete to win the hand of Maria Masipag.

Along his journey, Juan encounters a variety of animals, including those from the stories of ‘Pagong at Kuneho,’ ‘Ang Gamu-gamu at ang Lampara,’ and ‘Buwaya at ang Paboreal.’ Through these encounters, Juan learns valuable moral lessons that guide him on his path. With the help of the animals, Juan grows in character, and ultimately finds the ‘Gintong Niyog.’ Inspired by the classic Filipino children’s stories of ‘Juan Tamad,’ this production brings a new twist to the beloved tales.

The new work will feature ARDP company dancers Renzen Arboleda as the titular Juan Tamad, with Karla Santos as Maria Masipag. Dan Dayo will take on the role of Juan’s trusted sidekick, Matsing, with John Ababon as Pagong, Monica Gana as Kuneho, Earl John Arisola as Buwaya, Krislynne Buri as Paboreal, and Francia Alejandro as Lampara,. Also featured are ARDP trainees Gianna Hervas and Crizza Urmeneta as the Gamu–gamu.
Karla Santos as Maria Masipag
This production is specifically created for students, as it aligns with Grade 1-10 and High School subjects, including Filipino, Arts, Music, Humanities, Edukasyon sa Pagpapakatao, Personal Development, Araling Panlipunan, Physical Education. Through dance and storytelling, MGA KUWENTO NI JUAN TAMAD offers an enriching, multidisciplinary educational experience.

Alice Reyes Dance Philippines presents CARMEN AND OTHER SPIRITS

After the success of RAMA, HARI, Alice Reyes Dance Philippines presents CARMEN AND OTHER SPIRITS. A mixed bill featuring four choreographies that confront current issues in society.
Running from October 20-21 at the Samsung Performing Arts Theater, the program is top-billed by CARMEN, another masterpiece by National Artist for Dance, Alice Reyes. Springing off from Propsper MerimeĆ©’s 1845 novella of the same title, Reyes takes a unique perspective telling the narrative from the point of view of Don Jose, “His story is a grim account of “Low” life, pungent and raw... a tale of a man who has lost everything, his rank, his livelihood and now his life because of an uncontrollable infatuation with a woman,” Reyes said.

The woman of Jose’s infatuation was none other than our titular Carmen, a Gypsy-Spanish woman whose persona could be defined as a feminist, a term and issue that had been present as early as the 1800s. Reyes describes her version of Carmen as “a woman fully aware of her feminine nature. She is not a prostitute but is an ideal type of the genuinely emancipated woman - free, sovereign, and mistress of all her decisions. She would rather die than live with a man she no longer loves and respects.” In typical Romanticist form, the drama and the passion make for a riveting dance creation.
Macel Dofitas
Shifting from their comedic turn as the evil duo, Ravana and Soorpanakha, in Alice Reyes, RAMA, HARI, this year’s staging of Reyes’ CARMEN will have Richardson Yadao as the conflicted Don Jose and Macel Dofitas as the fiery Carmen.

Edna Vida who originated the titular role in Reyes’ CARMEN commented on the pair, “All through the years I’ve been hoping that Alice herself would restage Carmen, but I kept telling her that the lead must be Macel Dofitas. It’s her that I see as Carmen in talent, presence, and physique… and, Richardson Yadao must be her Don Jose, because he can certainly work the muscle of deep pathos. They are a fantastic pair on stage.”
Edna Vida

The “other spirits” are comprised of three choreographic works by the country's top Filipino choreographers:

Alden Lugnasin echoes synchronized swimming movements in his piece, SWIMMING THE ILOG PASIG. It is a provocative social and environmental commentary recalling the relationship between the people and the once rippling clear waters of the River Pasig which have now become a dumping site for trash. Lugnasin’s piece utilizes his unique style of movement and storytelling, as he costumes the dancers in the popular 80s brand of swimwear, Speedo.
Swimming the Ilog Pasig
Ronelson Yadao, Artistic Director of ARDP essays the importance of interdependency of two individuals in his work, TWO.

Lester Reguindin’s NOW draws inspiration from young environment activist, Greta Thurnberg, and her bold speech at the UN Climate Action Summit in 2019, where she challenges the powers that be to make a change for the sake of her generation. The piece which was originally choreographed for film transitions to a stage adaptation.
Lester Reguindin's NOW

CARMEN AND OTHER SPIRITS is presented by Alice Reyes Dance Philippines, the Cultural Center of the Philippines, CCP’s Professional Artist Support Program (PASP), with the generous support of Samsung Performing Arts Theater and Birch Tree Adult Boost. It features dance trainees from Guang Ming College, Philippine High School for the Arts, De La Salle College of Saint Benilde, and other independent performers.
