Theater Review: The Bodyguard The Musical

The timeless hits of Whitney Houston find a fresh spotlight in 9 Works Theatrical’s The Bodyguard The Musical, now playing at the Proscenium Theater in Rockwell, Makati City. For those who grew up with Whitney’s powerful songs, this is more than just a stage production. It is a vibrant, reimagined experience that pays homage to an era while speaking to today’s world.

Christine Allado and Matt Blaker in 9WT's The Bodyguard The Musical

While the original 1992 film is remembered more for its star power than its plot, this adaptation sharpens the story’s edges and updates it with smart, contemporary touches. Modern-day elements like social media, virality, and omnipresent CCTV surveillance are woven seamlessly into the narrative, making the tension more immediate and relatable. It is a thoughtful modernization that does not just retell a classic but reinvents it.

The thrill begins the moment Christine Allado steps on stage as Rachel Marron, opening with a high-octane performance of “Queen of the Night.” Surrounded by stellar backup singers and dancers, Allado commands the stage with a mix of vocal power and star presence. Arnold Trinidad’s jazzy, energetic choreography elevates the spectacle, while her stunning costume changes underscore her status as the ultimate diva of her time.

Matt Blaker brings warmth and wit to the role of Frank Farmer. His portrayal finds the sweet spot between stoic protector and charming lead, with the karaoke bar scene emerging as one of the crowd favorites. While comparisons to Kevin Costner are inevitable, Blaker makes the role entirely his own. He is playful, engaging, and unexpectedly funny.

A standout of the night is Sheena Palad as Nicki, Rachel’s sister. Her voice soars with emotion in “All at Once,” "Saving All for Love For You" and “Run To You” giving her character a compelling emotional arc that adds depth to the love triangle. Palad’s performance is magnetic and shows that this is not just Rachel’s story but Nicki’s too.

The production design is a technical triumph. Mio Infante’s scenography transforms the Proscenium stage with seamless precision. Clever use of LED screens, projections, and layered panels creates visual depth and fluid scene transitions. The modern multimedia treatment enhances the show’s contemporary tone without losing its classic soul. You can hardly notice the movement of set pieces, and that is the kind of theatrical magic 9 Works Theatrical consistently delivers.

Equally unforgettable is Vien King’s first major villain role as the stalker. His transformation from matinee idol charm to dangerous menace is both surprising and riveting, marking one of the night’s standout character turns.

Vien King as the Stalker

The ensemble and supporting cast bring the production to life with high energy, vocal strength, and precise execution. Every number feels big and alive, sustaining momentum from start to finish.

In a brief conversation with Director Robbie Guevara and Artistic Director Raul Montesa, I suggested an exciting idea: flashing the lyrics somewhere onstage to encourage the audience to sing along. For a musical built on Whitney Houston’s greatest hits, it is a move that could turn the theater into one big, joyful concert moment.

With its clever modernization, powerhouse performances, and breathtaking technical execution, The Bodyguard The Musical by 9 Works Theatrical is a must-see. It is a dazzling celebration of music, memory, and spectacle that proves Whitney’s legacy remains just as electrifying today as it was in 1992.

The show runs until October 19, 2025. Get your tickets at tinyurl.com/TheBodyguardAtRockwell.

Once On This Island - making waves of emotions in a spectacular musical

Saw the matinee show of 9 Works Theatrical’s Once On This Island last weekend with Angela Ken as Ti Moune and Sam Concepcion as Daniel.
The stage immediately took us to the sea. The drapes and fringes are constantly flowing while you hear the calming sound of the waves. If you’re not familiar with the show like me, you will immediately think you’re in a very colorful seaside vibe which they did deliver. I admit I was a bit worried about the sloped platforms and how they’d sing and dance but trusting the theater gods, our actors were completely safe to prance and give us a great show. The stage was indeed beautifully done.
The songs and dances are quite inviting to a party. It would be delightful if they pulled some audiences to dance onstage for a moment to remember.

This might be the most pleasant sounding musical for me to date. Angela Ken got the sound of a siren and pure emotions that comes out of Ti Moune. An early congratulations to her. Supported with many theater veterans in the show, all have complimented their harmonies.
Sam Concepcion who headlines another musical at the northern part of the Metro is also a must see. He and Angela make a cute chemistry that will swoon the audiences with their love story. Don't want to give spoilers but it is something emotionally devastating. It means that they are both great and effective in their parts.

And oh, I love the gods' hats. Hoped they could be part of the available merch so we can play gods at one time.

Once On This Island runs until September 29 at Carlos P. Romulo Auditorium in RCBC Plaza, Makati. Directed by Robbie Guevara. For tickets, visit bit.ly/OnceOnThisIslandMNL.

RENT cast talk to their 2024 alter egos -- life advices from their characters.

The highly anticipated return of the iconic musical RENT is poised to captivate audiences once again, gracing the stage of the Carlos P. Romulo Auditorium starting April 19, 2024, under the esteemed production of 9 Works Theatrical. Jonathan Larson's timeless masterpiece continues to resonate deeply, portraying a group of individuals navigating the trials and triumphs of life, a narrative that remains as poignant and relevant today as ever before.

During an exclusive media conference with the cast, we delved into a thought-provoking inquiry: what wisdom would their characters impart to them as actors? This introspective question sparked profound reflections, especially considering the youthful composition of the cast and the evolving landscape since the musical's inception. Yet, the enduring relevance of its social themes persists.

Paul Valdez, embodying the role of Steve, a pillar of support for PLHIV, shared a poignant insight. Steve, he mused, would underscore the significance of family—whether by blood or choice—and the imperative to cherish every fleeting moment. For Paul, the experience of collaborating with the ensemble has reignited his passion for theater, forging bonds akin to a supportive family.

Reb Atadero, portraying Mark Cohen, encapsulated a crucial message: "Live for the art, don't die for it." His words resonated deeply, urging fellow artists to prioritize self-care amidst the pursuit of their craft, echoing Mark's struggles as a starving artist.

Ally, another luminary in the PLHIV support network, conveyed a message of solidarity to Misha Fabian, emphasizing the importance of community and empathy, epitomizing the central ethos of RENT—making the most of life's fleeting moments and fostering meaningful connections.

Kai Banson, in the role of Alexi Darling, reflected on the theme of choice, navigating the intersection between circumstance and aspiration. Alexi's hypothetical counsel echoed Kai's assertion that every choice is valid, free from judgment—a sentiment underscored by the musical's narrative.

For Abi Sulit, portraying Pam, the essence of empathy resounded deeply. Pam's hypothetical query—how does one measure a life?—encapsulates the complexity of human experience, urging against facile judgments.

Lance Reblando, embodying the ethereal Angel, imparted a message of hope amidst heartbreak, affirming the existence of genuine love—a testament to the resilience of the human spirit.

Vyen Villanueva echoed the sentiments of his peers, advocating for courage over fear, a resonant theme in the characters' journeys of self-discovery.

The cast and creative team of 9 Works Theatrical's RENT

These insights offer a glimpse into the profound connection between actor and character, underscoring the enduring resonance of RENT's narrative. They are but a few luminaries in the rich tapestry of 9 Works Theatrical's production, which features a stellar ensemble cast.

Experience the unfolding of their narrative firsthand! Secure your tickets via ticket2me.net and embark on a journey of self-discovery, celebrating the vitality of life, health, and friendship.

RENT will grace the stage from April 19 to the first weekend of June 2024, with performances at 3:00 pm and 8:00 pm on Saturdays and Sundays, and 8:00 pm on Fridays, at the CPR Auditorium, RCBC Plaza in Makati.

After successfully closing tick... tick... BOOM! last Sunday, 9 Works Theatrical announced the return of their multi-awarded musical R.E.N.T., another masterpiece by Jonathan Larson.

tick... tick... BOOM! Time is not running out for everyone.

Live theater is back for 9 Works Theatrical. Maybe the most recent company to open its doors to the audience with their restaging of one of Jonathan Larson's notable musicals, tick... tick... BOOM! This expresses that there will be a right time for all things. And the timing for staging this is well-executed.
tick... tick... BOOM! is about a struggling artist who feels the pressure of success in a target time, the case of which is before the age of 30. Led by Jef Flores, with Reb Atadero and Tanya Manalang, alternating with Khalil Ramos, Vien King and Kayla Rivera, this musical hits to the core of everyone who undergoes existential crisis and overthinking the goals that surround us.

Jon (Flores/Ramos) is like many of us. He has the ideals, passion but punched by reality in the face. I sometimes associate him to Christian of Moulin Rouge who believes that everything has its order but dwells in the reality that we are starting penniless and need to work hard.

But on the bright side, we are lucky to be given with a handful of people who can support us. Reb and Tanya, playing Mike and Susan, could be your household companions. It seems that Jonathan Larson was very lucky to have these two in his life. He was not even harshly confronted of taking too long to push a career but instead they supported his dreams.
The three, collectively, has to be given credit for exemplary performance in their roles. They have formed a great ensemble with just 3 cast members. The stage also has a notable moment that drew the audience into a great impact which understands our feelings and in a comforting way. A special applause for director Robbie Guevara for a fun treatment on this production. It was clearly different in Netflix's version which stars Andrew Garfield, but that is for another commentary.

9 Works' comeback production of tick... tick... BOOM! runs until August 27, 2023 at the Carlos P. Romulo Auditorium. The cast are shuffled every show so you can watch different takes on the roles. For tickets, you may visit https://bit.ly/m/ticktickBOOMmnl

Fear or Love, Baby?

9 Works Theatrical presents Jonathan Larson’s tick, tick… BOOM!
tick, tick…BOOM!: A Must-Watch for All Artists and Creatives
If you’re a struggling artist or creative, odds are, you’ve found yourself asking this question: Will you pursue the passion that makes your life worth living? Or will you pursue a career that makes a living?

This is the story of our protagonist Jon in the musical tick, tick… BOOM! Jon is an aspiring composer who is about to turn thirty and is growing increasingly anxious about his future in theater. Pressure mounts when his girlfriend, Susan, hounds him about leaving New York to start a family and seek a more stable profession. Tensions also rise when his best friend Michael—an erstwhile actor-turned marketing executive—tries to convince him to join the fold.

Amidst it all, Jon hears a constant ticking–a reminder that he is getting older, with little to show.

“You're no longer the ingĂ©nue / Turn thirty, 1990 / Boom! You're passe!”
- 30/90 from tick, tick…BOOM!

Created by Jonathan Larson in the 90s, tick, tick…BOOM! brilliantly captures the internal war within every creative spirit: the struggle between going after one’s dreams and settling for a comfortable but joyless life. This story continues to ring true decades after its debut, largely because Larson harnessed his own life experiences, to bring the characters and songs to life. tick, tick…BOOM! began as a semi-autobiographical rock monologue about Larson’s hardships while trying to make a name for himself in the theater since the ‘80s. Sadly, Larson died the day before the preview performance of his masterpiece, Rent. He was 35.

“Can he make his mark, if he gives up his spark?”
- Johnny Can’t Decide from tick, tick…BOOM!

If you are a creative spirit, or if you have artist friends and family, bring them to RCBC Plaza any weekend this August to catch this era-defining musical!

In this restaging of the three-person musical, 9 Works Theatrical has assembled the perfect cast in theater veteran Jef Flores and Kapuso star Khalil Ramos (alternating as Jon), Miss Saigon alum Tanya Manalang and multimedia performer Kayla Rivera (alternating as Susan), and rising star Vien King and actor-creator Reb Atadero (alternating as Michael).

Back L-R: Kayla Rivera, Vien King, Reb Atadero, Tanya Manalang
