Tom Cruise talks about creating the sequel to Top Gun

Thirty-six years after portraying Pete “Maverick” Mitchell in Top Gun, Tom Cruise returns to the iconic role that catapulted him to global superstardom, with the long-awaited sequel, Paramount Pictures’ Top Gun: Maverick (in Philippine cinemas May 25).

“I’d thought about a sequel to Top Gun for all these years,” says Cruise. “People had asked for a sequel for decades. Decades. And the thing I said to the studio from the beginning was: ‘If I’m ever going to entertain this, we’re shooting everything practically. I’m in that F/A-18, period. So, we’re going to have to develop camera rigs. There’s going to be wind tunnels and engineering. It’s going to take a long, long time for me to figure it out.’ For years, people had said, ‘Can’t you shoot [the movie] with CGI?’ And I always said, ‘No. That’s not the experience.’ I said, ‘I need to find the right story. And we’re going to need the right team. This movie is like trying to hit a bullet with a bullet. I’m not playing.’”
On the original movie, although Cruise was filmed in the cockpit of an F-14 Tomcat, his castmates weren’t so successful in their endeavors. “We had other actors up there, flying,” says legendary producer Jerry Bruckheimer. “Tom was the only one we had usable flight footage for. We had tons of footage of the other actors in the air with their eyes rolling back in their heads. This time, thanks to Tom, all the actors on Top Gun: Maverick became accustomed to the fundamentals and mechanics of flight and G-forces, because of all the training they did months in advance. Unlike the first film, our actors are actually in the cockpits of the F/A-18s in flight, acting and speaking their lines of dialogue.”

Cruise says there is a “majesty and beauty” in flying an airplane. “It’s both using and defying nature,” he says. “And playing Maverick again, at a different stage of his life, has been an incredible experience for me. Maverick is still Maverick. He still wants to fly Mach 2 with his hair on fire. But you see the transition that Maverick undergoes. The pressure of him losing his best friend, the responsibility he feels about that and how he has carried that with him. This film is about family and it’s about friendship and it’s about sacrifice. It’s about redemption and the cost of mistakes.”
And that emotion hasn’t just been up on screen, but behind the scenes, on a journey that has taken the makers of Top Gun: Maverick both back in time and forward, into new frontiers in filmmaking. “What we have achieved with the aerial sequences is genuinely something that people will never have seen before,” says Cruise. “We’ve trained actors to be able to fly and perform in real F/A-18s. And, to do that, we took the greatest fighter pilots in the world [from the U.S. Navy] and we taught them about movies – the pilot and the actor had to work as a team. This is the sophistication of the aerial sequences. No one’s ever done this, ever.”

It’s not just pride that Cruise feels, though. Top Gun: Maverick isn’t just a movie – it’s a destination. A culmination of everything he has learned in his 40 years in this business (Cruise’s debut, Endless Love, was released on July 17, 1981), this is a story he’s been building towards. A love letter to aviation, for sure. But a love letter to movies too.

MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE FALLOUT movie review

Make time to watch Ethan Hunt's newest mission in Mission: Impossible Fallout in theaters starting tomorrow, July 25. Tom Cruise proves himself invincible in his latest death-defying stunts that you will have your mouths open as you munch your popcorn.
Don't miss any scene and make sure to pee before it starts playing. Each scene is as action-packed as the next so you cannot leave your seat. The return of Ethan and his IMF gang is more powered and I think Benji (Simon Pegg) will take a greater credit in this movie. The tactics and plans to take on the bad guys had leveled up and makes it greater than the original series.
The women of MI6 are also equipped with good fighting skills especially Ilsa Faust (Rebecca Ferguson) that holds a secret to the mission. I had to look at IMDB about the other casts and surprised about Princess Margaret, Vanessa Kirby, as White Widow who showed her knife skills and maintained her composure and elegance in the movie. I almost didn't recognize her, really.
Fallout also gave very interesting twists like how Henry Cavill appeared primarily as an ally then turned out to be Hunt's enemy. He was one tough antagonist for Ethan and the plot twist is riveting.
Seeing Mission: Impossible Fallout in IMAX will be very exciting and also scary for the thrilling and explosive actions.

ROCK OF AGES movie review

if Elvis Presley is still alive, he would have joined in the fun of Warner Bros. Pictures adaptation of Rock of Ages which gives an all-star cast in this wonderful musical-movie. this will be opening tomorrow, June 14 in Philippine theaters and 15th worldwide. so you better line-up for those tickets like you're in for a big concert.
it is about Sherrie Christian who got out of her hometown to see if her dreams can come true in Hollywood. there she finds Drew Boley who happens to work at the Bourbon Room -- the place where rock music took over the strip of Los Angeles and the people by a disease. the music which outraged concerned citizens, led by Patricia Whitmore, the mayor's wife -- pushing them to protest against the Bourbon Room and it's music.

Julianne Hough and Diego Boneta as Sherrie and Drew

Catherine Zeta-Jones as Patricia Whitmore
as Drew and Sherrie knew each other better, the trials on their relationship were almost at the top of their dreams having an encounter with Stacee Jaxx -- the biggest rockstar in the industry of that day. he himself is not delivered from pain and agony as consequences of fame. even the Bourbon Room didn't escape the trials put against them nearing foreclosure of the bar.

what's exciting about this movie is the music. an array of very well-known rock music from Def Leppard, Foreigner, Journey, Jon Bon Jovi, among others. i say, i grew up in their music! i can just imagine beforehand how i will sing-along with the sequences just how i am in Mamma Mia. and there was never a dull moment. the humor and energy of the cast are very theatrical like you are sitting on the front row seats of a concert. Tom Cruise as Stacee Jaxx? it did well. his matinee look fused with a rockstar can totally get a gig. ladies will go gaga over him and yes, he sings. if you could remember Cheers, he sang You've Got that Lovin' Feeling.

Tom Cruise as Stacee Jaxx

and how i missed Catherine Zeta-Jones in the movies! you'll look at her amazing performance in Chicago but her character in Rock of Ages is more intense! Alec Baldwin and Russell Brand are the scene-stealers. i didn't realize that they can sing. you'll really see how they had a good time filming this. congratulations to Adam Shankman for this wonderful production. and yes, as how some others put it, it will be my favorite movie musical yet.

TOM CRUISE accepts MISSION in GHOST PROTOCOL

Tom Cruise, now with only a limited number of team of the IMF, seeks to protect a nation from a destruction caused by nuclear warfare in the fourth installment of MISSION IMPOSSIBLE: GHOST PROTOCOL. it will be screens in the Philippines starting December 15 2011 and also available in IMAX format.
before anything happened, the Kremlin in Moscow was bombed down and all was blamed to the IMF in which the agents are connected. and this is the mission that Agent Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) has to solve.

Mission Impossible trademark activities are still present in this movie. wall climbing, and now at the famous Dubai tower; first-class disguise using rubberized masks; never-before-seen gadgets and other incredible things in the movie. but the most exciting part for me is how he climbed the building in Dubai.

the film is highly-technical and they use terms suited for an agent. it can be understood as simple terms but if you are fans of detective movies or series, you can easily adapt to it. what i also like about MI4 is that each story is independent of the other. each of the cast has his/her limelight to project so you'll get a glimpse of who does things.
lucky for the Filipinos who will be able to see the movie 1 week before it's US release. catch it December 15 in your favorite theaters.

KNIGHT AND DAY movie review

bumping into a stranger and then finding yourself in a near-death adventure is June's (Cameron Diaz) most memorable one. rushing to go to her sister's wedding accidentally have been a bumpy ride with Roy Miller (Tom Cruise) who appears to be an ex-FBI agent. since Roy Miller has brought June into great danger, he pulls her and protected her against all that chases them.

actually a really good movie. a combination of Die Hard stunts with the comic Cameron Diaz as Tom Cruise completes the package. you'll also get to travel into different countries but it won't give you that awe of the place they're in. also, the story doesn't give much focus why an element is so important in the story. to summarize, what's all important is that their enemies are killed.

KNIGHT AND DAY gets into Philippine theaters on June 24 2010 distributed by Columbia Pictures International.
