MOVIE REVIEW - Cruella

Fashion, depression, competition and revenge are very distinguished in the 101 Dalmatians rip off movie Cruella, starring Emma StoneEmma Thompson, Mark Strong and more.

Cruella's backstory begins in her childhood and established why she became brilliant, bad and a little bit mad. An orphaned girl who started a dream finds herself living it and then becoming her idol's worst enemy and competition. Avant-garde designs are a feast to the eyes, the soundtrack that transports you to the 70s and unexpected twists that makes it more interesting every time. The necessary elements in self-branding and PR stitched into a drawing story gets you sewn into the story making it dark but fabulous.

Emma Stone as Cruella

If you've seen the original 101 Dalmatians story, Cruella pays tribute to it by providing Easter eggs that are very familiar to it. It also provides prologues on what happened in the said animation story like how she met the Darlings, her sidekicks Jasper and Horace and how she came into fascination with dogs. Note that she doesn't kill.

Overall, it is quite an enjoyable movie. Stay until the mid-credits too. Cruella is now streaming on Disney+.

Emma Stone's many looks in Cruella

The new behind the scenes clip of Cruella highlights the narcissistic and fierce fashion looks of Cruella De Vil, starred by Emma Stone.

From paper to fabric, Emma Stone transforms into different looks but still hails the 101 Dalmatians villain. Costume designer Jenny Beavan definitely has called on the divine muses for her designs to bring these extreme impressions. It is important for her to make Cruella just black, white, gray and red to create the cruel icon for revenge. Watch the behind the scenes featurette below which also features styles for the Baroness (Emma Thompson).

Cruella opens in theaters or order via Disney+ this May 28. Directed by Craig Gillespie.

Brilliant. Bad. A little bit mad. - Emma Stone dons iconic black and white hair as Cruella in first trailer

As announced previously in D23, Emma Stone gives her take on the iconic 101 Dalmatians villain Cruella De Vil in Disney's spin-off film, Cruella, that will soon hit theaters and streaming this 2021.
In this movie, Stone delivers the origins of the famous antagonist maybe before she meets the Dearlys and maybe we'll see how her fascinations with the spotted dogs came to about. The trailer gives a hint on what happened on her younger years, it may be a case of society's disapproval or inacceptance.

I think the trailer gives Harley Quinn / Birds of Prey feels in the first impression, starting with innocent looks transforming to the eccentric make ups and fashion. Detaching itself from the usual comedy 101 Dalmatian movies, Cruella gives a darker approach. See the car chases and heist. What do you think? Discuss in the comments below.
For us Disney fans, it will still be an interesting movie and something we can look forward to. It will also be a time to revisit our 101 Dalmatians films, animated or live action. We hope we'll be able to see it in the theaters when all things are okay.

Cruella also casts Mark Strong, Emma Thompson and more. Coming May 2021, directed by Craig Gillespie.

LA LA LAND movie review

Bringing in the the classic feels in this movie, La La Land takes you to the nostalgic era with the likes of West Side Story, Grease, Breakfast at Tiffany's and more. It gives that old, romantic feeling but the story is very familiar -- chasing dreams. That's how Mia (Emma Stone) and Sebastian (Ryan Gosling) wants us to pursue.
On the third time teaming up with Ryan Gosling, Emma Stone proved that she can be very versatile in trying a musical which did not disappoint. Same goes with Ryan Gosling. Their chemistry is perfect and they make you feel in love in a very light way. Mia and Sebastian tell you a great love story that will keep you hooked on every scene.
La La Land is sort of a very familiar movie to you as it provides scenes that may be reproduced from other great older movies. Each musical sequence is a treasure that came from famous musicals. When you talk about scoring, the opening song is a breath of fresh air. Although in a stressful traffic setting, seeing a beautiful day in front of you and our characters is a cool start. Hear more of La La Land OST here.
Opening scene (Another Day of Sun)
I don't want to spoil the last part for those who haven't seen it yet but it was a quick punch for me. It will leave you exclaiming why such thing happened when all is going perfectly. But one thing I learned is that life still goes on and you'll make regrets but you will be able to remember every bit of your life happily.

La La Land is winner of 7 Golden Globe awards including Best Actor (Ryan Gosling), Best Actress (Emma Stone) and Best Picture and nominated for 14 Academy Awards. Still showing in cinemas.

THE CROODS movie review

a movie for the whole family, THE CROODS takes you on an adventure of survival and making your life worthwhile for everyone around you. the roller coaster journey of the first family is a combo of laughter, drama, courage, and love.
THE CROODS are just your average family, an over-protective father, an open-minded mom, a granny that doesn't believe much of his son-in-law, a teenage daughter, a meat-head son, and a wild child. together they were confined in a cave and gets out in fear looking for their means of survival. but when their cave got destroyed from the continental drift, the Croods finds it hard to adjust themselves.

in every family, the teenage child always gets into the curiosity and urges to take some new adventure. Eep (Emma Stone) opens her world into new thinking that her father would not sink in. adding to Grug's (Nicolas Cage) own fear is Eep's separation to his domain by meeting Guy (Ryan Reynolds), a smart boy that has relatively experienced many things in survival.
being stuck in an evolving world, THE CROODS is a colorful journey through earth's change. notice that accepting change is a subliminal subject in the movie. close family ties is also very prominent that everyone can relate to, especially fathers to their daughters. relationships should be reciprocative though it entails sacrifices. every action takes a noble character.

THE CROODS is also a visually-enticing movie for kids. with weird creatures that are ongoing evolution, kids and adults alike think on identifying these creatures and even so the animals they resemble currently. it's a great watch in 3D.

THE CROODS opens March 22, 2013 in Philippine cinemas. distributed by 20th Century Fox Philippines.

the CROODACEOUS family

in this pre-historic comedy, we are about to meet the world's first family that were confined into a cave for many years. after their cave was destroyed, their journey into a spectacular landscape has changed their outlook forever.
the dynamic family of the Croods is lead by the head, family patriarch Grug (Nicolas Cage) who supplies, protects and secures the kin up to its boredom. his over protection to his wife and three kids has concealed the family from the outside world. the eldest, Gran (Cloris Leachman) is the feisty mother-in-law who never gets tired of needling, and even sometimes assaulting, Grug. the matriarch Ugga (Catherine Keener) supports, and follows her hyper-vigilant husband, Thug (Clark Duke) stays and enjoys the static status quo as he does nothing. Eep (Emma Stone) is the rebellious teenager, who strives to look for new adventure, curious of what's out there and collides with his father's rules.
at the outside landscape, they meet Guy (Ryan Reynolds) who has survived the dangers. with him, the Croods discover the extraordinary world with amazing creatures and life essentials -- like fire and shoes. Guy attracts Eep's glance and will be any father's fear to his teenage daughter.

GANGSTER SQUAD movie review

we're back to post-war period in Los Angeles and Mickey Cohen rules the city in his unruly ways. the life of Mickey Cohen, his gang and the group that led his downfall, is portrayed in Warner Bros. Pictures' GANGSTER SQUAD.
Mickey Cohen, played by Sean Penn, is in the look out by LA police officer Sgt. John O'Mara (Josh Brolin) and his secret crew of former officers. the mob king definitely made a fortune in Los Angeles which every citizen grew a scare on him. Mickey Cohen's staff were gone one by one and the victims were rescued.

the process of finding his skilled secret crew is no joke but definitely funny as they get along. brains, fighting skills, gun handling and even staying sleek in suit is a sure requirement for his men.
on the other note, we'll have a romantic angle with Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone as they deal with the odds as Jerry Wooters and Grace Faraday. it seems that this movie just had to have it.
Josh Brolin for me lacks that kind of charisma to lead the squad. and I'd think that Anthony Mackie and Robert Patrick has more skills than him but he nailed his role punching Mickey Cohen down.

directed by Ruben Fleischer, GANGSTER SQUAD opens in cinemas, January 30, 2013. distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures Philippines.

THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN review

all i can say is it's totally different from Tobey Maguire's first movie. approach is even younger and it's much more closer to the comic version. in addition to that, Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone's real life romantic factor makes it the best romantic superhero movie ever!

director Marc Webb has really made effort to bring back Spider-Man's glory to all his fans from the previous franchise which features Tobey Maguire. i admit that that series gets more and more disappointing. trailers really rose anticipation about the villains, but when you see the movie, it would suck.
Peter Parker's curiosity is very much expressed in this movie as he was portrayed as a nerdy student. it seems like he was very much impressed to himself and does anything he thinks he can do. and as Spider-Man is very much mutant in the previous movies, Peter Parker' webs are from a wrist band.

action moves are really fast and very clean. except for that emotional scene where Spider-Man was trying to swing from crane to crane with the help of the operators which looked kinda awkward. it makes me cringe. i think the drama is not needed there.

you will really anticipate a sequel in this one. and i wonder who will be Mary Jane since Emma Stone might be out of the picture. or will it focus on Gwen Stacy and Mary Jane's cat fight over Peter? who knows, it would be very exciting. haha
The Amazing Spider-Man now crawls in theaters by Sony Pictures.

THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN character posters and photos

on June 29 2012, Marvel's Spider-Man franchise will have its reboot. as everybody know, the new Spider-Man will be entitled "The Amazing Spider-Man" and will star Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker and Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy.
this movie will tell us the story behind Peter Parker before he becomes Spider-Man. as it suggests, there is an untold story. we have been introduced with Spider-Man and Peter Parker dating Mary Jane in the last franchise but here, he will have his original girlfriend, Gwen Stacy. Gwen Stacy is his classmate and lab partner in highschool before they got the thing together.

Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy

Dr. Curt Connors is his supervillain in this film played by Rhys Ifans. like Dr. Octopus, he is once a good scientist with a cause until his technology consumed himself. in his case, the advocacy is to regenerate his amputated arm but a huge side-effect occurs afterwards thus transforming him to the reptile villain, The Lizard.

Rhys Ifans as Dr. Connors / The Lizard

as for Peter Parker, Andrew Garfield reprises the role as the nerdy highschooler. he goes back to his pains being orphaned by the death of his parents. at the event he is bit by the radioactive spider in a museum, all the action starts beginning with the discovery of his powers, saving lives and beating The Lizard. and as Andrew Garfield dates Emma Stone in real-life, the two would look cute together onscreen.

AMANDA BYNES: from sweet girl, to mean girl

Making high school life hell for good girl Olive (Emma Stone) in Columbia Pictures' new teenage comedy “Easy A” are talented young actresses Amanda Bynes (“Hairspray,” “What a Girl Wants”) and Aly Michalka (TV's “Hellcats”) who are going to surprise audiences because they’re playing characters very different from what people are accustomed to.

Michalka and Bynes, who play Rhiannon and Marianne, respectively, readily admit that the differences between their characters in “Easy A” and their past work are a big part of what drew them to their roles.

“Rhiannon is crazy,” says Aly Michalka of the character she portrays. “She’s a girl who is very aggressive and passionate about whatever she believes in, or whatever her opinion is. She is definitely very foulmouthed and will say anything that’s on her mind, which can sometimes be either offensive or abrasive, but she always means well. She just doesn’t really have any sort of a filter. But she loves her best friend Olive, and like best friends sometimes do, she loves to give her a hard time and push her buttons.”

Known primarily to younger audiences for her work on the Disney Channel sitcom Phil of the Future, Michalka enjoyed pushing the envelope with Rhiannon. “I love that she’s a strong character. She’s similar to me in that she’s a great friend, and very loyal, but we’re definitely very different in the way we speak and handle ourselves. Rhiannon also dresses a lot more provocatively than I do. She wants to get attention from people and wishes she was twenty-five, even though she’s still a teen.”

When it came to the tightly wound, evangelical Marianne, Amanda Bynes found inspiration in a character very different than the kind of young woman she typically plays. “I’m used to playing the goofy, funny girl,” says the actress, “and Marianne is the very religious, uptight girl who thinks she rules the school. A lot of her actions come across as kind of mean, evil and totally judgmental, but she thinks she’s coming from a good place, because she claims to be doing the work of God.”

Bynes says that although Marianne’s actions are kind of questionable, there was still something likeable and relatable about her. “Everybody has met that girl who is a ‘type A’ personality, and just wants to be right, be better than everyone and always wants to one-up everyone,” says Bynes. “She’s a fun character to play.”

In directing the actresses, Will Gluck found it easy to forget his talented cast weren’t simply wonderful actors, but stars to the world outside a film set. “We got a good reminder when we were shooting on the street and there over 100 kids mobbing Emma, Aly and Amanda, trying to take their pictures and get autographs,” recalls Gluck. “They’ve established themselves so well in their characters that you sometimes forget they have such a big following.”

Opening across the Philippines on Nov. 10, “Easy A” is distributed by Columbia Pictures, local office of Sony Pictures Releasing International. EMMA STONE is dangerous beauty

With her striking beauty and sincere talent, Emma Stone (“Superbad,” “Zombieland”) is claiming her role as one of Hollywood’s most sought out actresses. She has just been cast as Gwen Stacy in the “Spider-Man” reboot in 2012. And now, she’s starring in one of the year’s smartest and coolest teen comedies – Columbia Pictures’ “Easy A.”

In the film, clean-cut high schooler Olive (Stone) finds that her new-found bad-girl rap – courtesy of a little white lie about losing her virginity – has an upside: she is finally getting noticed. Olive decides to exploit her "easy" reputation and use the school rumor mill to advance her social and financial standing. But life starts to spin hilariously out of control, and there is only one boy, Todd (Penn Badgley), who sees through her vixen veneer to the heart of it.

On paper, Olive was a dynamite part: intelligent, funny, observant, surprisingly tough and heartbreakingly vulnerable. The big question for the filmmakers, then, was who could make this vital role come alive on screen. The success of the project depended on the perfect casting for Olive.

“Olive is an extremely smart girl,” explains director Will Gluck, “but she doesn’t annoy you with her smartness. A lot of people and characters that are really smart who know everything and talk like adults are so annoying that you want to punch them in the face. This is a girl who is smart like a whip, but doesn’t know she’s smart, and if anything, she’s embarrassed by the fact that she’s smart. You feel for this girl so much, because she’s trying to figure out who she is.”

Naturally, Gluck and the producers had no shortage of actresses who were eager to take on such a well-written role. “Everyone wanted to play the part,” the director recalls. “I got calls from what seemed like every actress between the ages of 16 and 28. As soon as I heard that Emma Stone wanted to do it, I was very excited. We met really quickly, and she had no problem auditioning for me. A lot of this movie takes place with Olive speaking into her computer’s web cam. After her audition, Emma went home, did a scene into her webcam and emailed it to me. I took the disc with that scene to the head of the studio and said ‘This is the girl.’ She was by far, always my first choice.”

Stone says she had been sent the script by a friend before it had been bought by anyone, and when she read it, she knew she had to do it.

“I instantly related to the character,” recalls Stone. “Olive uses all these big words and makes silly puns, and she’s well aware that what she’s doing is kind of dumb, but she can’t stop herself from doing it. I do the same thing. There were so many things that made me feel a kinship with the character, that I felt that whether or not it was me, she deserved whoever it was that played her be willing to understand her. I think it would be easy to go very goofy with her, or read her the wrong way, and I was afraid that if it was the wrong actor, they wouldn’t be true to this amazing character.”

In her first meeting with Will Gluck, Stone found that the two of them were very much in synch about the character. “Will told me he wasn’t looking for someone to become Olive,” explains Stone. “He was looking for someone that was Olive, because Olive becomes whoever is playing her. I understood that there was no becoming this girl. You either were or weren’t Olive. I’m so thankful that they gave me the chance.”

a cinematic challenge for PENN BADGLEY in EASY A

Best known for his role of Dan Humphrey in the hit series “Gossip Girl,” Penn Badgley was more than happy to take on a new character challenge with his role in Columbia Pictures' new, edgy comedy, “Easy A.” Playing the part of ‘Woodchuck Todd’ was so tempting, he arranged to fly between the west and east coasts of America to accommodate the shooting schedules for both the film and his series.

In “Easy A,” clean-cut high schooler Olive (Emma Stone) finds that her new-found bad-girl rap – courtesy of a little white lie about losing her virginity – has an upside: she is finally getting noticed. Olive decides to exploit her "easy" reputation and use the school rumor mill to advance her social and financial standing. But life starts to spin hilariously out of control, and there is only one boy, Todd (Badgley), who sees through her vixen veneer to the heart of it.

Laying out the role’s particular appeal to Badgley, director Will Gluck explains, “The first time we meet Penn, his face and body are all painted blue. The second and third time you meet him, he’s in a woodchuck costume. The sixth time you meet him, he’s wearing a lobster hat. It’s not what you expect from Penn Badgley.”

“It really does run the gamut,” agrees Badgley, “and that’s one of the reasons I wanted to play the part. Ideally, for most of the film, you don’t really know what my character is doing in the movie, but it all makes perfect sense at the end. I had a lot of fun being the strange, irreverent guy who does these seemingly inconsequential things throughout the movie, but what made me really want to play the role, was the substance and importance of the character. It’s not necessarily a complicated role, but it’s one that could be easily misconstrued and played inappropriately if taken in the wrong direction.”

Adds Gluck, “There are certain guys in high school that can be the mascot, can hang out with the athletes, can hang out with the nerds. Todd is the kind of guy who straddles all those different subsets of high school and kind of skates through.”

“Yeah, he just does it,” agrees Badgley. “But I think it’s more than just being an agreeable sort of character. He’s like ‘I’m a teenager, I’m living in Ojai, I’m just waiting to go to college and for my life to begin.’ I think that’s the way he feels, and he’s having fun while he does it. If everyone else thinks he looks like an idiot for doing what he does, it doesn’t matter. Even though everything I’m doing as the character is theoretically really dumb and humiliating, hopefully I’m doing it with enough dignity that makes it sort of cool.”

Speaking of humiliation, in the pivotal finale scene, Badgley found himself back in blue paint, and in the woodchuck costume at the same time, and eventually, shirtless. “It’s already sort of a miserable feeling having the body paint on that’s clogging your pores and feels claustrophobic, and then to have the woodchuck costume on top of that,” says the actor. “I was shirtless in the scene, so the seams were rubbing against the skin. It was really hot in the costume, and production had to turn the air conditioning off for the scene. There was a lot of sweating, and in each take I’d have to run around, throw things into the crowd, yell and scream, have the costume ripped off, and then pick Emma up and join in the dance. It was a long, arduous process.”

Opening soon across the Philippines, “Easy A” is distributed by Columbia Pictures, local office of Sony Pictures Releasing International.
