A WRINKLE IN TIME movie review

What if we could snap to the universe just like that?
Well, I would ask, what if I can get back my time just like that? A Wrinkle In Time tried to be an exciting family movie. If not only for Chris Pine, Oprah Winfrey, Reese Witherspoon and Mindy Kaling who were cast in this film, I am not sure if I would be looking forward to it. A Wrinkle in Time also tries to be very intelligent that kids would not be able to comprehend and turned out boring instead.
And too young for a love plot for Meg (Storm Reid) and Calvin (Levi Miller)? I think so. I just thought that it was okay to have companions in the space adventure, but the love angle is too early to tell. Charles Wallace played by Fil-Am actor Deric McCabe had a better character than Meg and Calvin.
Sorry, 2 out of 5. For amazing visuals at least.

A Wrinkle in Time is now showing in cinemas. Distributed by the Walt Disney Company (Philippines)

How did Into The Woods come to theaters?

Into The Woods, this year's one of the most anticipated movies, is proud to be the mind child of Rob Marshall adapting it to movies through Walt Disney Pictures. Experience the magic worldwide on Christmas Day and January 28 in Philippine cinemas distributed by Columbia Pictures.
A sit down meeting with Stephen Sondheim and Sondheim finds it appropriate to have Into The Woods to be put into cinemas. Rob Marshall and producing partner, John Deluca, have been fans of Sondheim's musical since it opened on Broadway in 1987. He says to describe it, “The story seamlessly intertwines Sondheim’s emotional, funny and brilliant score with Lapine’s intricate and masterful book, which is a modern twist on several beloved fairy tales, and is entertaining, while examining complex themes like the consequences of wishes, the parent/child relationship, greed, ambition, loss, and, perhaps most importantly, unconditional love and the power of the human spirit.”

Then in 2011, on the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, Marshall heard President Obama addressing the families of the victims. In an effort to console them, Obama said, “You are not alone...No one is alone.” The phrase “No One is Alone,” which is also one of the most moving and memorable songs from “Into the Woods,” struck a chord with Marshall, and in that moment he knew that the time was finally right to bring the beloved musical to the screen.

“In many ways, I think ‘Into the Woods’ is a fairy tale for the 21st century post 9/11 generation,” Marshall says. “Sondheim and Lapine were way ahead of their time when they wrote it. The comforting knowledge that we are not alone in this unstable world gives us all that glimmer of hope.”
For Sondheim, “’No One Is Alone’” was written as a community song. “I believe Arthur Wing Pinero said that in writing a play, you tell the audience what you’re going to do, you do it and then you tell them that you’ve done it. If you tell them that you’ve done it, then it makes a package,” he says.

“’No One Is Alone’ tells them that we’ve done it,” Sondheim explains. “This is what the show has been about. No one is alone: we are all connected in some way and we are all responsible for each other’s actions. It’s something I believe firmly and it’s something that’s worth writing about.”

Marshall and DeLuca took their passion project to Disney, and immediately knew they had found the perfect company to bring the stage musical to life. “We were thrilled that the company embraced the project the way that they did,” says Marshall. “They were truly interested in expanding the definition of what a ‘modern fairy tale’ film could be.”

Producer Marc Platt, who joined the duo in making the film, says, “Disney is a company that historically tells the classic fairy tales, so moving forward it should also be the company that finds new, contemporary and unexpected ways to tell these stories.”

So after 27 years, the long-awaited classic was set to begin its journey forward. “The Woods of our story is universal, and can mean so many things,” Marshall says. “It is the place you go to find your dreams, confront your fears, lose yourself, find yourself, grow up and learn to move forward. It’s all part of life. So ‘Into the Woods’ we go, again and again...”

“Into the Woods” is a modern twist on the beloved Brothers Grimm fairy tales, intertwining the plots of a few choice stories and exploring the consequences of the characters’ wishes and quests. This humorous and heartfelt musical follows the classic tales of Cinderella (Anna Kendrick), Little Red Riding Hood (Lilla Crawford), Jack and the Beanstalk (Daniel Huttlestone), and Rapunzel (MacKenzie Mauzy)—all tied together by an original story involving a baker and his wife (James Corden & Emily Blunt), their wish to begin a family and their interaction with the witch (Meryl Streep) who has put a curse on them.
The principal cast is led by Meryl Streep, Emily Blunt, James Corden, Anna Kendrick, Chris Pine and Johnny Depp. See the trailer here:

STAR TREK Into Darkness movie review

i haven't got the chance to see Star Trek 1 in the movie houses but Star Trek: Into Darkness didn't fail me to enjoy it. seeing it last Friday in a premiere screening was a good experience to know the friendship and adventures of Kirk (Chris Pine) and Spock (Zachary Quinto) from the TV series of my childhood.
Star Trek: Into Darkness mainly narrates a manhunt for a one-man terror machine that threatens the destruction of the world. and this mission of the Enterprise crew to capture this man and save the world. just another heroic deed with a lot of drama to the bromance of Spock and Kirk as the rest of the crew are making their move not to crash the spacecraft and smash the world.

it's a good hype for Trekkies to anticipate for this movie but it didn't surprise me at all nor even increased excitement towards the end. merely seeing an episode of Star Trek on TV with just a lengthened exposure with the casts. bringing in more functions about the crew with that little romance and emotions from Spock and Uhura (Zoe Saldana), and a sparking attraction with Carol (Alice Eve) and Kirk. 3D watching is not worth it.

you may catch it starting May 15 at theaters nationwide (Philippines).

PEOPLE LIKE US movie review

in People Like Us, Sam (Chris Pine) rediscovers a new segment of his life just as he knew that his father died. he had a sister which she never knew about as his father hid it from him. so as to fulfill his father's wishes, he looks for the lost sister and tries to learn how to love her like they belong for a long time.
when his father left him with a huge amount of money, he was ecstatic feeling that the money was his. greed empowered him to claim the money himself by trying to brainwash his "sister" with good deeds. but what keeps him intact is his family duties, bit by bit he had things that took him sometime to make up and cope up for the lost time with his family, so much to his mother (Michelle Pfeiffer).
in this comedy/drama, everyone will be addressed that a family makes you complete. and it makes you search for something good in everyone. and yes, the title itself puts to note that whether what you're doing in your life, it's not the money that can make you happy but the people around you, especially your family.

UNSTOPPABLE movie review

hold on to your seats for 20th Century Fox's latest action thriller, UNSTOPPABLE, starring Chris Pine and Denzel Washington.

based on a true story, an unmanned train is set to bring terror across Pennsylvania with toxic chemicals and will pulverize anything that block its way. thanks to the neglect of the train employee.

i, too, would like to commend the heroic deeds of Frank Barnes (Washington) and Will Colson (Chris Pine), the train was able to slow down from its more than 75 mi/hr speed. with their job-experience differences, a machine at rage is no match for teamwork. what they did is really amazing.

the movie is really breath-taking. this was commonly my reaction in action movies. the last time i remember i had that feeling was when i saw Die Hard. intensity grows minute after minute and mile after mile as 777 takes the railroad. you will be biting your nails to what Denzel Washington and Chris Pine does in the scenes when they were able to catch up with the raging train. all in all, you will enjoy the movie.

opening today in cinemas, UNSTOPPABLE is produced by 20th Century Fox distributed by Warner Bros.

director's interview for UNSTOPPABLE

Action maestro Tony Scott presents his fifth film with Denzel Washington in the runaway train thriller “Unstoppable,” inspired by true events. Denzel describes the director as the hardest working person on set, while his co-star Chris Pine calls him “the magic movie elf”, a tightly wound ball of appropriately unstoppable energy.

Here, the British auteur explains the method behind his madness, and how his work was inspired by his mother.

Q: What is it about the theme of man versus machine that you found inspiring?

A: Because my last movie was The Taking of Pelham 123, everyone thinks I’ve got this love affair with trains. Actually, it’s two different stories and this one is more like Jaws; we even call the train “The Beast”. The movie starts at 50 miles an hour and ends up at 150.

Q: Why did you want to tackle another movie set on a train so soon after Pelham?

A: I read the script three years ago and I loved it. Other people said to me, ‘Why are you doing another train movie?’ I said I don’t see it that way, it’s a totally different beast. This thing is very different from anything I’ve done before and it has this tremendous momentum in terms of the story.

Q: This is the fifth time you’ve chosen to share that journey with Denzel Washington. Why him?

A: He’s a major talent. With every movie I’ve done with him we’ve always managed to tap into a different aspect of his personality, so it’s never Denzel. He can internalize something and give very little on the outside and still communicate everything. Two of my heroes are Gene Hackman and Denzel Washington and they both have that same thing. They do a lot of homework and they sit it all back, but they still communicate.

Q: You deliberately avoided doing a lot of CGI work on the film – why is that?

A: I take pride in the fact that I shot everything for real. I sound like an old fart, but I’m not. I just think one of my major strengths is being able to put people in the seat of a racecar or a cockpit or a train. This film has weight and energy and danger. We shot the whole thing at 50, 60, 80 miles an hour. We did a 360-degree track around the train at 80 miles an hour.

Q: Did you get any pressure to use CGI?

A: When my mom was still alive she used to say there’s something ‘funny’ about that scene—when it didn’t quite work. It was always the CGI. Plus there’s something about the weight of those engines and the noise and the power and the scale that is really hard to reproduce with CGI.

Q: Were you inspired by any other, great American runaway train movies?

A: I love Runaway Train, the movie with John Voight and Eric Roberts. We pay homage to it at the end.

Opening November 10 in the Philippines, “Unstoppable” is a 20th Century Fox film to be distributed by Warner Bros.

Chris Pine and Denzel Washington in thriller UNSTOPPABLE

Denzel Washington and Chris Pine team up in the upcoming action-thriller “Unstoppable” directed by Tony Scott. Washington and Pine play train engineers whose lives are put at risk in an attempt to stop an unmanned long freight train carrying combustible liquids and poisonous gas enough to wipe out an entire city.

Based on actual events, the story centers on an experienced train engineer, Frank Barnes (Washington) who’s about to be laid off as part of company cutbacks while Chris Pine plays Will Gordon, the newbie conductor hired to replace him.

Chris Pine who starred in the blockbuster movie “Star Trek” likens both movies in a recent interview with MTV. “It (“Unstoppable”) also has the genetic code of the summer tentpole movie. It’s fun and action-packed. And it’s got some really interesting, complex characters to kind of anchor the whole thing. And Tony always talked about how the movie was like a train. Once it gets going, it just does not stop,” Pine shares.

“Unstoppable” opens November 10 in theaters nationwide from 20th Century Fox to be distributed by Warner Bros.
