hunt NUMBER 4, hunt ALEX PETTYFER!

DreamWorks Pictures takes a big gamble on young actor Alex Pettyfer and gives him a star-making lead role in the new sci-fi action-adventure “I Am Number Four.”

Based on the best-selling book by Pittacus Lore, “I Am Number Four” revolves about an extraordinary young man, John Smith (Pettyfer), who is a fugitive on the run from ruthless enemies sent to destroy him. Changing his identity, moving from town to town with his guardian Henri (Timothy Olyphant), John is always the new kid with no ties to his past. In the small Ohio town he now calls home, John encounters unexpected, life-changing events—his first love (Dianna Agron), powerful new abilities and a connection to the others who share his incredible destiny.

For the role of John Smith, aka Number Four, director D.J. Caruso (“Eagle Eye”) knew he had to find someone with a strong personality who also had a sensitive side to portray the character. “John’s extraordinary abilities make him very different from the other kids in school, which in turn makes it very hard for him to fit in,” Caruso says.

“A lot of teenagers can relate to that, particularly those who have to move to a new town at that age,” he adds. “Trying to integrate into high school is tough for anyone. There is a universal aspect to his character that the audiences can hang on to because even though he is superhuman, the emotions that he has are something that a normal teenager would be experiencing.”

Many weeks went into the selection process as the filmmakers looked for that one actor who would have the attitude and physical prowess to bring John Smith to life. When Alex Pettyfer had his first read, D.J. Caruso knew that he had someone special on his hands. “I feel that Alex has a really special gift,” Caruso says. “As interesting, attractive and dynamic as he is, he has an incredible vulnerability that really works for the character. I think it will make audiences fall in love with him.”

Producer Michael Bay (“Transformers”) says of Pettyfer: “I’ve been watching Alex for a long time. He’s got a ton of charisma and physicality. As Number Four, he brought a mix of strength and vulnerability that not a lot of young actors can pull off.”

Alex Pettyfer was delighted to land the lead role of John Smith for two reasons. The first was Pettyfer’s desire to work with D.J. Caruso. “D.J. is incredible,” he explains. “I came onto this movie because I think he’s got an amazing vision. He brings something different to the table. He brings science fiction into a world and makes it real,” says Pettyfer.

The second was the story and the role. “It’s a really cool premise,” explains Pettyfer. “John Smith is at a point in his life where he has a choice and his dilemma is that he wants to be a normal kid but he has been given this destiny of becoming a warrior. He is initially very reluctant and has a James Dean ‘Rebel Without a Cause’ outlook. He has the kind of temperament that you feel could explode at any moment.

“John is trying to find out who he is and what he wants to do with his life,” Pettyfer concludes. “A lot of kids are going to relate to what he is going through in the story—being an outsider and trying to fit in.”

Opening across the Philippines on Feb. 23, “I Am Number Four” is distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures International through Columbia Pictures.

RENT is issued again in February

9 Works Theatrical's rendition of RENT is back due to a popular demand. and i am so happy that they have improved it from the last two runs. not only the production has tweaked, but there are new faces to expect in the rock musical.

first is Al Gatmaitan, who is an understudy for Gian Magdangal's character, Roger. also to alternate Sheree Bautista as Mimi, is Ciara Sotto who displays her pole dancing talent on stage.

this run also features a comeback for the original RENT cast of 9 Works Theatrical. Carla Guevarra-Laforteza who plays Maureen in the first run alternates Mian Dimacali. you really have to see how talented these girls are most especially in their moment performing Over the Moon.

i love the new production styles in this year's run. the lighting has improved and there's a very magical feeling watching the show. the actors also play their parts very well this time. they have imbibed the characters and they look very relaxed portraying their part. i happen to notice myself that they are named as their characters, forgetting that they are just actors. this has been the best staging of the show. bolder and fresher that you can come back again to watch.

for the third time, i still don't have that "sawa" factor. moreover, i have understood the message that RENT and Jonathan Larson is telling us. that love is the center of all and all of us are life supports of each other.

9 Works Theatrical's RENT is staged at Carlos P. Romulo Auditorium, 4F RCBC Plaza, Ayala Ave. cor Gil Puyat Ave., Makati City starting February 12 - March 6 2011.

Show Schedule:
Feb 12, 13, 18, 19, 20, 25, 26, 27, March 4, 5, 6.
Friday, Saturdays and Sundays at 8:00PM
Saturdays at 3:30PM
Sundays at 4:30PM

new, shiny cars in CARS 2

Disney/Pixar reveals the new characters in the upcoming animated adventure “Cars 2,” the highly anticipated sequel to 2006’s blockbuster “Cars.”

Below are the images and the individual character descriptions. “Cars 2” hits the track on June 24, 2011, and will be presented in Disney Digital 3D™ and IMAX® 3D in select theaters.

Finn McMissile is a master British spy. Though charming and eloquent, it’s his stealth maneuvering, intelligence and years in the field that enable him to thwart unexpected attacks from bad guys, making quick daredevil escapes.. Finn’s design is sleek and timeless, but he’s also prepared for any tricky situation with an arsenal of ultra-cool gadgets and weaponry, including front and rear grappling hooks, a missile launcher, deployable magnetic explosives and a holographic disguise emitter.

Holley Shiftwell is a beautiful young British desk agent, turned spy-in-training who’s stationed in Tokyo. Well-educated and sharp, she knows every trick in the book—or rather, she relies on every trick in the spy manual. She’s armed with the latest state-of-the-art spy equipment imaginable, from hidden cameras and concealed weapons to a telescoping utility arm and a holographic pop-up display. Holley is a highly motivated agent, but is fresh out of the academy, so her experience is based on lessons learned in school rather than real-life situations.

World Grand Prix contender Carla Veloso hails from Rio de Janiero, Brazil. The sweet but powerful Latin diva can dance the night away at “Car-nival,” but spends most of her time on the racetrack. After setting a new track record at the local Interlagos circuit, she was drafted to join the 24-hour endurance racing team in Europe, where she posted a consistent series of podium finishes.

Known as the “World’s Greatest Rally Car,” #6 Raoul ÇaRoule was born in Alsace, France. A restless soul, Raoul joined the famous ‘Cirque du Voiture’ French circus where he learned Gymkhana – a graceful, drift-filled motorsport that taught him pinpoint timing and an unparalleled ability to navigate tricky courses with ease. He’s the first car to ever win nine consecutive rallies.

Shu Todoroki is a Le Motor Prototype racer representing Japan and bearing #7 in the World Grand Prix. Shu was raised at the base of the active Mount Asama volcano in Japan, and soon became a champion on the Suzuka Circuit. His sleek design sports a fiery red Ka-Riu dragon, which Shu borrowed from Japanese legend because he relates to the small, yet fierce nature of the dragon.

Grem is a dented, rusty orange AMC Gremlin. After years of being dismissed for his design, even being called a “lemon,” Grem has a big chip on his fender that has led him to the underworld of international espionage.

Acer has always felt like an outcast in the car world. The beat-up green AMC Pacer joined forces with fellow “lemon” cars as henchmen for the devious Professor Z, whose clandestine mission is to wreak havoc at the highly visible World Grand Prix.

BLACK SWAN movie review

BLACK SWAN reflects the story of ballerinas who dream about getting the big role in the famous rendition of The Swan Lake. here, Natalie Portman is Nina Sayers, a girl wishing for the role but apparently didn't get it. instead she tried so hard to the extent of losing herself, particularly her mind.

getting in to the title role brings the "Diva Complex" in the ballerina. aside from being the star of the show, they want to be everything. they want all the attention and don't want to lose it. that's why they go beyond the partnership between the big people in the industry. a little discreet prostitution in there.

at first, Nina is a sweet woman and will do everything straight and she wants it to be the result of hard work. but then, she discovers the reality in the industry and tries to give in. but she enjoyed the prize of fame.

BLACK SWAN gave me a psychological terror. it really freaked me out but it was a very good movie. i just can't seem to look at blood and how it drips from the body. there are also very scary scenes that grossed me out but very well executed for the effectiveness of the story. especially when Natalie Portman twists her joints and cracks her bones.

Natalie Portman is worthy of an award in this movie. with the training that she underwent to give her best in the movie, she deserves more than a standing ovation. in cinematography, it has an old feeling like some other art films and makes you really follow the story of the lead. then you will be drawn by the emotions of the mood of every scene. even the make up of the black swan is very fierce!

the BLACK SWAN will be in theaters starting Feb 9, 2011 by Fox Searchlight.

OROSMAN AT ZAFIRA REVIEW

Francisco Balagtas is reborn in Dulaang UP's adaptation of Orosman at Zafira which starts today, February 4 to 26, 2011 at the SM Mall of Asia Centerstage Theater. on its 3rd run from the Wilfrido Ma. Guerrero Theater, Bit by Bit Productions sought to bring it to a greater stage for more public to see! and with a baby producer like Bit by Bit, this show is a must-see!

it opens with Zelima played by Tao Aves, introducing the story and the three kingdoms, Marruecos of the north, Tedenst of the south and Duquela which is between them. a festive dance of the three kingdoms enlighten the stage but the greed of the Tedenst Sultan will end it all. adding to it is the attraction of Aldervesin (Red Concepcion) and Gulnara (Jean Judith Javier) which enraged Marruecos king, Mahamud.

a war ignited between Tedenst and Marruecos almost didn't stop the love that is kindled in the hearts of Orosman at Zafira. with love that is in their hearts, no war comes between them.

finally, a play that can make it to the list of great musical as in Broadway. we can all be proud of Dulaang UP's Orosman at Zafira with the highly-commendable production and musicality. truly, Filipinos are very talented with the variety of dance and music integrated in a lovely comedia by Balagtas. Carol Bello (musical director) developed and seamed modern sounds into Filipino ethnicity that the modern Filipino youth can easily relate to.

i also loved the stunts and dances as if they are flying in the air. you can feel the rage and anger in the dance sequences.

there are more improvements in the show. as the actors portray the different kingdoms, their costumes look that they are in royalty. they are now glittering in jewels and they deliver the character very well. although it omits few elements like the character of death and other

congratulations to Bit by Bit Productions. you have made justice in this play and will definitely recommend this to all who want to watch it.

watch Orosman at Zafira happening now in SM Mall of Asia in all weekends of February. ticket prices range from Php 400, Php 800 and Php 1,000 and you are guaranteed a good show.
