Hearts full with Al Gatmaitan's In My Heart concert

Make time to listen to classical and modernized operatic music genre in Al Gatmaitan's In My Heart concert happening until tonight at Arts Above (Artists' Playground) in West Avenue in Quezon City. This limited concert is guaranteed a must-see.
Al Gatmaitan delivers a love story through songs which are close to his heart and sending the love to you, his audience. Arts Above has the perfect space to deliver his story. The acoustics and the intimacy of the place played a vital role in helping us feel and understand the story as we appreciate Al's great vocal talent.

Singing a variety of songs in English, Italian, Filipino and even Latino felt like Al is talking to you as close as a friend. As this concert is entitled "In My Heart", the repertoire is purely heartfelt. It started with the emotions coming from a child, as he grows up, having fun with friends, being a lover, a child, and more. Special mention to his duets with Banaue Miclat-Janssen Dulce Estranjera and Sheila Francisco. Al's operatic singing added more depth especially my favorite part, Sound of Silence, which has the best arrangement and delivery I've seen and heard so far. For that, he deserves a standing ovation. I would very much agree if he/she thinks that Al Gatmaitan may be our own Josh Groban or Luciano Pavarotti. He can sing from classical to modern songs giving it a twist of operatic arrangement. In fact, Sound of Silence is kind of rock. I look forward to the day that Al is making it big in the music scene, all of us filling arenas that cheer for him. Congratulations as well to Musical Director Jesse Lucas and Director Roeder Camanag for making this possible even at a limited time.

ANG BAGONG HARANA romanticizes your individuality as a nation

Philippine Opera Company aims to promote rich Philippine heritage and culture in a limited performance of "Ang Bagong Harana" from September 29 - October 1, 2011 at the Carlos P. Romulo Auditorium. A spectacular show of Philippine music offered to the youth.
The show provides color, and ignites your pride to be born Filipino. The vibrance and diversity of each region appeared in one stage as 11 voices serenade you with the best Philippine songs of all time. All of the Philippines is served at one stage. From a versatile dropped curtain, you will see different reasons why to be proud. The simple cloth transformed into a variety of sights of a Philippines and a book opened to our culture.
A tribute to the unknown songwriters from all regions, the loved Ryan Cayabyab and George Canseco among others accompanied by the dances from Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao. Also narrating our roots, starting from the innocence of the Filipino children, the traditional song Bahay Kubo and Pen Pen de Sarapen brings back the childhood in everyone of us.

As "Harana" is a romantic gesture of courtship in the Philippines, we will also be served with native folk dances from the low lands to the top of the mountains. Adorned with wonderful costumes and accessories, the dancers exhibit the traditional ways of courtship in different regions.

And the production is quite fantastic. Allow your nationalism release from your hearts with Anak and Bayan Ko with grandiose arrangements.

And for all of us, we hope that we get the message of promoting our own heritage and culture for the upcoming generations. To promote our identity as a nation and keep it. That our nation is filled with treasures that cannot be stolen from us. The Philippine Opera Company and the rest of the industry are blessing to every Filipino individual.
Floy Quintos did a very splendid job directing this production. As we watch the production, we can't help but to sing along with the common songs that they have in the repertoire. And the fantastic costumes from the mountains to the lowlands glitter in the eyes of the audience. It really deserves a standing ovation.

who is Maria Callas?

the name is not unfamiliar to the opera industry. La Divina herself, Maria Callas, is an American-born Greek soprano. born December 2, 1923 as Sophia Cecelia Kalos to parents, George Kalogeropoulos and Evangelia "Litsa" (sometimes "Litza") Dimitriadou.

she had her musical studies in Greece and her career in Italy. there she displayed her singing prowess into the works of Donizetti, Bellini and Rossini; further, to the works of Verdi and Puccini; and, in her early career, to the music dramas of Wagner. thus, earning the La Divina title.

her devotion to the opera has paid off very well throughout her career. however, her dedication to the work but a love of art made her forget about herself when she was stricken with an ailment, losing her voice. she suffered complications in her body that led to her downfall and returning to the creator on September 16, 1977.

La Divina is remembered in the industry by people through Terrence McNally's MASTER CLASS. in MASTER CLASS, we will see Maria Callas' passion for the art instructing her students. and here in the Philippines, we will witness how Ms. Cherie Gil portrays La Divina as a model with love for life.

see MASTER CLASS in the Carlos P. Romulo Auditorium, RCBC Plaza, Makati City starting July 29 2010. directed by Michael Williams.
