Time to Shine: Make Your Mark for Earth Hour at SM Malls

Small actions can make a big difference. This year, SM Supermalls invites everyone to #GiveAnHourForEarth by joining millions around the world in the annual Global Lights Switch Off on March 23 from 8:30pm to 9:30pm. This 2024, SM marks 16 years of commitment in supporting the annual campaign initiated by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) since its inception in the Philippines in 2008. You can make your mark too by participating in various eco-friendly activities across SM malls.

Have fun raising awareness
At SM North EDSA, fan groups and the Philippine K Pop Society will come together to illuminate the night with light sticks during the Global Lights Switch Off, while participating in pre-concert activities from various booths, including a plastic waste collection Idol Challenge. Unplug and unwind with an acoustic performance at SM City Manila or get pumped with a glow-in-the-dark Zumba party at SM City Pampanga. Swifties and acoustic fans gather for a chill evening of music while basking under the night skies in SM City Marikina and SM City San Mateo.

Shop and dine in the dark
Mall-goers can enjoy a candlelit dinner at participating restaurants, explore Green Retail Finds at the SM Store, or indulge in gadget-free entertainment at board game cafes and arts and crafts hubs. Customers can also check out solar light solutions at ACE Hardware or glow up while they power down with beauty and wellness treats at Watsons. More exclusive Earth Hour deals await via SM Deals, SM Malls Online, and at an SM mall near you.

Get moving and recycling
Promoting an active and sustainable lifestyle, customers are encouraged to walk or bike around the mall during Earth Hour. Furthermore, individuals can make a meaningful impact by dropping off recyclables at SM's plastic waste collection booths in partnership with Friends of HOPE, or by disposing of e-waste responsibly at designated collection bins located at Cyberzone or information booths.

Through the collective efforts of SM Supermalls, its tenants and customers in supporting Earth Hour in 2023, SM malls saved 4825.61 kwH of energy, equivalent to CO2 emissions from charging 417,940 smartphones. Shoppers can make an impact and #GiveAnHourForEarth at SM malls, showcasing how raising awareness on the climate crisis can be a vibrant and enjoyable experience too.

easier ways to become an environmental advocate with Luis Manzano

I was at Glorietta 4 this Thursday, March 16, and WWF Philippines was holding a fundraising activity in support of the advocacy programs lead by Marine Conservations Steward Luis Manzano. He spearheaded the activity called Individual Donor Programme to invite all mall goers to contribute to programs making communities sustainable and environmentally concerned.
With the IDP, people can contribute for one time or a lifetime to environmental conservation efforts in the Philippines by visiting WWF booths located in different malls. It will be a more convenient way for us to give back to our planet by providing support to activities like: promoting clean source of renewable energy, educating the youth on environmental conservation and helping slow or reverse climate change impacts. See the interview below:

Luis Manzano champions WWF's Marine Conservation Program that includes initiatives on sustainable fisheries plus food security, community-based ecotourism, and biodiversity conservation.

WWF Project sites include Tubbataha Reefs and Cagayancillo in Palawan, Donsol in Sorsogon, Mt. Iglit-Baco Mountain Range in Mindoro, Ipo Watershed in Bulacan and Hamilo Coast in Batangas. WWF-Philippines also conducts climate studies in 16 key cities around the country.

On March 25, join WWF-Philippines with the rest of the world in making a difference by turning off lights and reverse and slow down climate change as we celebrate Earth Hour. Center of activities is at SM Mall of Asia by the Bay earlier on and highlighting the event at 8:30 to 9:30 pm with the turning off the lights.

WWF Philippines joins Earth Hour 2016 and more life-changing programs

For 20 years, World Wildlife Fund (WWF) in the Philippines has been pursuing the protection of wildlife and the conservation of the environment for the current and future generations. Thus the programs and campaigns of preserving endangered species, use of renewable resources and more has been ongoing for the past decades and continue to help in these causes. Three notable activities are up close to the Philippine culture and it has not only conserved natural resources but also uplifted the lives of the people.
First are the eco-tourism programs in Donsol, Sorsogon where visiting the endangered whaleshark (now 469) aka "butanding" has changed the attitude of Bicolanos towards the gentle giant. Before it was considered as a pest in the sea waters towing away fish which is the main source of living, it has become a major attraction in the area and the people of Donsol recognized the importance of the butanding in the marine ecosystem. They have helped conserve and improve the number of whalesharks and also protected their habitat. [see full story here]
Next is creating a renewable energy through solar powered lamps where common electricity is not reaching the remote islands in Palawan. These lamps help the students in studying during night time and be ready for school the next day. It is also currently helping fishermen in navigation while they go out to the sea at night. The lamps are very cost-efficient and functional that the Gift of Light program aims to spread the light to more areas in the Philippines. [full story]
Another is the propagation of the tamaraw in the Mindoro province when it almost became extinct. The Mangyans and the local government of Mindoro, together with WWF, has doubled the number of the local buffalo to 405. This preservation is very significant not only to the Philippines but also to the ecosystem in the area.

More and more activities have been ongoing but one of the highlights this year is the Earth Hour which will happen on March 19 2016 at 8:30-9:30PM. Manila has been a great contributor to the saved energy since this event started. Each and everyone is invited to turn off their lights and conserve energy at the said date and time and pledge to save mother earth now and for future generations. Conservation of this energy has a huge impact in slowing down global warming which we are experiencing today. This event will also take place in 170 countries around the world in more than 7000 hubs and cities.

Manila's hosting of the Earth Hour will take place in Quezon City Memorial Circle and spearheaded by WWF Philippines ambassadors Mikee Cojuangco, Rovilson Fernandez, Marc Nelson and now joined by Iza Calzado.

play ALTERSPACE if you love the Earth

we have only one chance to save the planet and there is a great way to know everything and learn how to save it. saving the planet is very important because it provides our everyday sustenance. without it, we are not able to survive. there are a lot of things to love the planet -- the diversity, natural wonders, amazing occurrences and the best of it all, life.

a proudly Filipino-made game will teach us how to take care of the environment. Alter Space -- a Facebook game that helps us realize the effects of what the planet is currently experiencing today, global warming. it features games on how to reverse the effects by real practical tips that we can encounter inside the game.

tonight as we celebrate "Earth Hour," we can check out the games on Alter Space like the following:

DEFROST THE FRIDGE REGULARLY – That’s a tip from Alter Space. Playing the game generates Earth-friendly tips that save energy and reduce carbon emissions.

ALTERNATIVE POWER SOURCE – Playing Alter Space required gamers to find sources of clean energy, or “Cleanergy” as AboitizPower calls it. These include solar energy, hydro-electric
power and geothermal power.

YOUR OWN PLANET – Is your house a mess? Well, how about taking care of an entire planet? Alter Space lets gamers protect their own planets by reducing their Carbon Footprint.

WATER POWER – Water is one of the best sources of clean energy. The Alter Space Hydro Plant mini-game teaches the importance of harnessing water to create energy.

this is a very nice game to enjoy by you and the kids. not only you had fun, but you learn to take care of the environment. and don't forget to support Earth Hour tonight at 830PM - 930PM.
