SALT: a spy game with Angelina Jolie

Celebrated actors Liev Schreiber (X-Men Origins: Wolverine) and Chiwetel Ejiofor (2012) join Angelina Jolie in Columbia Pictures’ spy thriller SALT as CIA officers who are at odds in dealing with Evelyn Salt’s (Jolie) explosive case.

As a CIA officer, Salt swore an oath to duty, honor and country. Her loyalty will be tested when a defector accuses her of being a Russian spy. Salt goes on the run, using all her skills and years of experience as a covert operative to elude capture. Salt's efforts to prove her innocence only serve to cast doubt on her motives, as the hunt to uncover the truth behind her identity continues and the question remains: "Who Is Salt?"

Schreiber is an actor known for serious dramatic roles in such films as The Manchurian Candidate and Defiance , but he has also recently branched out into action with Wolverine. “Liev is very politically aware and very thoughtful, so he’s great to work with,” says Jolie. “He takes the role seriously, and still has fun with it.”

When Schreiber was first sent the script for Salt, he read it very quickly, he says. “It was a page-turner,” he recalls. “I zipped right through it. It was a really fun read.”

Schreiber, who plays Ted Winter, Salt’s boss at the CIA, was also intrigued by the concept of the hunt for a sleeper spy, who has been living in deep cover with a new identity. “I’ve heard so many stories about undercover cops who’ve gone into deep cover for years at a time and then kind of lost themselves in their roles,” he says. “They had become really confused about their allegiance and needed serious deprogramming once they were pulled out.” This is the question that Winter must grapple with as he’s torn between wanting to help Salt and wanting to catch her. Can the person he knows so well really be someone else entirely?

Jolie describes Schreiber as “one of the actors that doesn’t sit back. He puts a lot of work in, and we knew when he came in that he was going to make his character better and stronger.”

Similarly, the filmmakers sought a high-energy actor who could bring out the intensity in Peabody, the man whose job it is to track Salt and bring her back in. As a product of the CIA’s counter-intelligence division, he is not an especially sympathetic character. “They’re not the policy makers, they’re the guns,” Jolie explains. Jolie was especially pleased when Olivier Award-winning British actor Chiwetel Ejiofor, who was seen in the films 2012 and American Gangster, was cast. “He’s a strong man, Chiwetel, and he’s very tough. He’s such an amazing actor.”

As the counter-intelligence officer on the case, it is Peabody ’s job to determine whether the defector is lying about Salt or telling the truth. “It starts as kind of a dual pursuit of her – to physically get her back into custody, and also to work out whether there is a mole, and whether she is that mole,” says Ejiofor. “And that becomes the cat and mouse of the film.”

“Peabody ’s attitude is that he is going to catch Salt, no matter what it takes,” says producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura. “There’s an intensity to Chiwetel’s performance that is so graceful. I think people are going to fear for Evelyn Salt as he’s chasing her.”

Since he plays the antagonist, having a good working relationship with Ejiofor was important to Jolie. “I think it’s important to get along very, very well with the person who’s your enemy in the movie, because you end up being a little bolder in your fights,” she says. “He and I had a good time.”

Opening soon across the Philippines , Salt is distributed by Columbia Pictures, local office of Sony Pictures Releasing International. Visit www.Facebook.com/ColumbiaPicturesPH and like the fanpage to get the latest movie news, video clips and contests.

FURRY secret agents in CATS AND DOGS

People the world over adore their pets. And why not? Just look at them: a steady old sheepdog with a shaggy mop of hair, a soft, sweet purring kitten…such simple creatures, so loyal and loving, and all they ask from us is our protection and support.

Clueless humans! Guess again. “That picture of domestic harmony is just what they want you to see,” claims director Brad Peyton, who happily exposes the true story of backyard politics in Warner Bros.’ new 3D adventure “Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore.”

The truth is those placid furballs idling on the sofa and goofy mutts chasing their tails are really the paw-soldiers of a vast underground network of canine and feline covert agents, surveillance experts and four-legged assassins of every stripe. Heroes from both sides of the fence, they risk their lives to protect our way of life and uphold the balance of power between mankind’s most trusted and fiercely competitive animal companions: cats and dogs.

It’s the thin furry line between life as we know it and pure howling madness.

“Once people bond with their pets and get to know their personalities, it’s easy to imagine them doing things when we’re not around,” Peyton suggests. “This movie is just an extension of that idea—that animals have their own secret lives. Of course, we take it a lot further; we have them using jet packs and rocket cars. But it all comes from that basic curiosity that I think most of us have had at one time or another, wondering what our cats and dogs really do all day. It’s why candid clips of animals caught in the act of being themselves are so popular on the Internet.”

Producer Andrew Lazar, who first introduced audiences worldwide to this battleground of paws and claws in the 2001 hit comedy “Cats & Dogs,” says, “The idea that these animals are living such actively outrageous lives right under our noses is what makes it so irresistible. Cats and dogs can save the world while people go about their business completely unaware of how close they came to disaster.”

With that in mind, the everyday activities of the average pet take on new meaning.

And what’s really going on is nothing less than the endless war between two species at odds since their earliest ancestors sought out the first caveman’s campfire. But now, one renegade agent has upped the ante. Determined to not only break the bond between dogs and humans forever but also pit feline against feline, Kitty Galore’s bid for global domination could jeopardize the future of all creatures, four- and two-legged alike.

“We don’t mean to misrepresent our feline friends as all bad,” says producer Polly Johnsen. “It’s just this one cat who isn’t quite with the program. As a result, cats and dogs must unite against a common foe and, in fact, it’s another cat, Catherine, who emerges as a true hero by being the first to extend her paw to the other side.”

“We thought it was time for them to team up as equals,” adds Lazar.

“Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore” blends live action, state-of-the-art puppetry and computer animation in 3D. It stars Christina Applegate (“Samantha Who?”), Oscar® nominee Michael Clarke Duncan (“The Green Mile”), Neil Patrick Harris (“How I Met Your Mother”), Sean Hayes (“Will & Grace”), James Marsden (“Hairspray”), two-time Oscar® nominee, Emmy and multiple Grammy Award winner Bette Midler, Oscar® nominee Nick Nolte (“The Prince of Tides”), Joe Pantoliano (“The Sopranos”) and Chris O’Donnell (“NCIS: Los Angeles”).

Opening soon across the Philippines in Digital 3D and regular format, “Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore” is distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.

SORCERER'S APPRENTICE movie review

love weakens us all. that's the theme of the movie in contrary of the power blasts of magic in Walt Disney's THE SORCERER'S APPRENTICE.

i like the concept where the heir of the Merlinian clan was being raised upto the 21st century. found by Balthazar Blake (Nicholas Cage) to destroy Morgana - the evil sorceress that vanished Merlin thousands of years ago. a brief history of the wizards were displayed in the beginning of the movie.

to become a sorcerer himself, Dave (Jay Baruchel) has to undergo training from one of the original Merlinians himself, Balthazar. the problem is when their love one is in danger, they are willing to give up everything for their sake. that's when these sorcerers lose the battle. even Balthazar himself gets out of focus when his love, Victoria (Monica Bellucci) gets in the way as Dave even gets weak when his mortal girl appears in the scene.

it was also nice to see how they derived a scene from Mickey Mouse's Fantasia into a full length film. this family film will surely be enjoyed by fantasy fans. graphics and special effects are also nice as what to expect in a Jerry Bruckheimer film.

THE SORCERER'S APPRENTICE will be in theaters July 15 2010 by Walt Disney Pictures.

NOTE: finish the whole movie until after the credits then find the "hidden Mickey."

INCEPTION movie review

you won't be able to get out of the concept for a while until you figure out how every scene worked. INCEPTION is a very recommendable movie for everyone to watch. it will make your brain juices flowing in the puzzling points.

you will get to think that there are dream levels in each of us. and if really people can get in your dreams consciously in which you are not, it might be a very dangerous thing but to them, it's fun and you might keep your secrets no more.

Christopher Nolan really did a fabulous job turning our minds. screen play, visuals and casting is carefully stitched together to make this awesome movie. he did his own play at his own mind creating a new world and instances which somebody might be able to think but repressed his own creativity to let it out.

this concept my be very helpful to the investigators only if the subject would allow it. if it appeared before Minority Report, then the latter is just waste. check out the movie showing on July 15 distributed by Warner Bros. Productions.

reunion in GROWN UPS

Adam Sandler, Kevin James, Chris Rock, David Spade, and Rob Schneider head up an all-star comedy cast in Columbia Pictures’ GROWN UPS, the story of five childhood friends who reunite thirty years later to meet each others’ families for the first time. When their beloved former basketball coach dies, they return to their home town to spend the summer at the lake house where they celebrated their championship years earlier.

Sandler came up with the idea of a guy who feels like he and his family have lost their perspective of what’s important in life. So, when he unexpectedly has to go back to his home town, he decides to use it as an opportunity to get back to his roots and get his family on the right track. To do this, he rents a lake house and invites his old friends and their families to come and stay with them for the Fourth of July weekend.

“The whole project was really appealing,” says director Dennis Dugan. “These real-life friends get together for a summer to make a movie about friends who get together for a summer at a lake house. It’s a bittersweet reunion, because their coach has died, but they’re also happy to see each other. They’re meeting each other’s families – it’s them and their wives and girlfriends and kids and dogs – at a moment when they’re all transitioning in their lives.”

The underlying sweetness to the story proved to be the key in bringing the all-star talent together. “It’s a really, really good script that Adam wrote with Fred Wolf,” says Rob Schneider. “It’s very funny and it has interesting characters. Dennis really encouraged us to make it real – get out there, play around with it, and make it a natural performance.”

As co-star Maya Rudolph puts it, “There are a lot of funny people in this movie, but it’s not just a lot of funny people in this movie. It’s a movie about old friends played by people who really are old friends. You can see that history come out in the relationships.”

“Adam created something special for all of us,” notes Salma Hayek who plays Sandler’s wife. “All of our children are about the same age, and mostly girls, and they all bonded immediately. It was really a family environment – it was perfect.”

In the movie, the five characters are supposed to have enough natural basketball talent that as children they could win a local championship. However, the guys agree: only Sandler and James have game, with Spade and Schneider a step back, and Rock bringing up the rear. “I’m OK – I have a few trick shots,” says Spade. “Sandler’s the best of us, and Kevin’s pretty good. I’m OK, Schneider’s OK… sorry, Rock.”

“I am not an athlete,” admits Rock. “Can I play? No. I couldn’t play when I was young, but at least then, I played a lot, so I found ways to contribute. Now that I’m older, I really suck. It’s just horrible.”

The job of balancing all of the talent and realizing the vision for the film falls to Dennis Dugan, a veteran Happy Madison Productions collaborator. “I’ve lost count of how many movies I’ve made with Adam,” he jokes. “I’ve done four movies with Rob Schneider, three with David Spade, three with Chris Rock, and this is my second with Kevin James.”

Opening soon across the Philippines , Grown Ups is distributed by Columbia Pictures, local office of Sony Pictures Releasing International. Visit www.Facebook.com/ColumbiaPicturesPH and like the fanpage to get the latest movie news, video clips and contests.
