SILENT SKY review

From Reine Productions and Repertory Philippines, based on the story of a lady that followed the stars and made a great discovery about patterns that has changed the course of astronomical history and studies. Silent Sky has led Henrietta Leavitt (Cathy Azanza-Dy) to a breakthrough, though she left everything that made her -- family, and even raising a family of her own -- to pursue her dream.
In Silent Sky, we can learn how women were almost deprived of their abilities and left domesticated as what happened to Margaret Leavitt (Caisa Borromeo). How their rights were stooped down by the men and to do the hard work which pushed them to do greater things.

In a way, Silent Sky has this approach of making a totally nerdy play into something enjoyable and funny. Like the Big Bang Theory but tables have turned and there are more female than male cast (Topper Fabregas). There were also some cheesy line exchanges from Peter Shaw and Henrietta that will take your emotions above the moon and stars. The rise and fall of emotions will take the audience to an emotional whirlwind that are exciting. There is one great line between Shaw and Henri that will swoon us "...we're far, but not apart."

Adding to the great casting of Azanza-Dy, Borromeo and Fabregas are Ms Bibeth Orteza (as Annie Cannon) and Naths Everett (as Williamina Fleming) that can actually steal the show with their antics and presence. Ms Bibeth has this domineering but powerful dialogues that you will agree with and Naths performed a natural Scottish astronomer that also fueled Ms Bibeth's teases to Henri and Peter Shaw.

The production design that depicts the cosmos, the laboratory and the costumes that define the period are well executed that it didn't have to work on special effects made it extraordinary.
Silent Sky runs for 2 weekends only, starting from Feb 1-3 and Feb 8-10 at Carlos P. Romulo Auditorium, RCBC Plaza, Makati City.

Repertory Philippines' 76th season offerings

Repertory Philippines proudly announces its line-up for the 76th season. and this season which i can say 80% discusses on how man's revolves around the woman. in different levels on how a man appreciates it, the woman is the central subject of his actions. and this season, Rep is tapping 3 movie classics. so there is a big chance on having moviegoers and theater fans to enjoy.
first is a farce play written by Marc Camoletti. BOEING BOEING tells how one man manages to enjoy 3 fiancees without being caught. he devotes his time with three flight attendants while he looks at a flight schedule. when some schedules get delayed or too early, this is when the trouble comes close.

and for the first time, Michael De Mesa joins the Rep family in this first production. below is a reading with Michael Stuart Williams. this is directed by Miguel Faustmann and will be playing on January 25 to February 17, 2013.

next is a musical entitled, NO WAY TO TREAT A LADY starring Michael Williams, Carla Guevarra-Laforteza and Pinky Marquez. this darkly comic thriller is about finding a serial killer who preys only on middle-aged women who were portrayed by his mother who was an actress. on March 1 - 24, 2013, solve the mystery as directed by Menchu Lauchengco-Yulo.

third is based on a Dustin Hoffman movie in 1967, The Graduate. Reb Atadero and Cherie Gil will play Benjamin and Mrs. Robinson. check out this scene as read by Gabz Santos and Menchu Lauchengco-Yulo.

also this year, the Theater for Young Audiences will present Hans Christian Andersen's ALICE IN WONDERLAND. watch the opening song below. directed by Ms. Joy Virata and will be playing August 17 to December 15, 2013.

and to complete the 2013 line up, THE PRODUCERS will be finally done in the Philippines. Topher Fabregas and Audie Gemora will play Max Bialystock and Leo Bloom as they produce a Broadway flop to make money. check this energetic video in one of the songs in the musical. playing November 15 to December 15 2013, directed by Jaime del Mundo and Menchu Lauchengco-Yulo.

Alice in Wonderland and The Producers still needs more cast. if you want to audition, you may call the Rep office at 571-6926, or email at info@repertory.ph. you can also subscribe or buy shows of the season. LIKE the Repertory Philippines Facebook page.

the magical world of THE WIZARD OF OZ

kids will definitely have an extravagant view in Repertory Philippines' The Wizard of Oz which opens tomorrow, August 18. the Theater for Young Audiences section of RepPhils has developed the show in every sense in which eyes will never be taken out of the stage and still provide an underlying lesson to think about. a very colorful show featuring the adventure of Dorothy, Tinman, Lion and the Scarecrow in search for the wizard to grant their wishes.
just like in the movie with Judy Garland as Dorothy, the beginning of the program is it's sepia tone. but colors appear grandiosely as the story progress. most vibrant colors are in the world of the Munchkins.
and the Emerald City are in its greenest! the entire stage transforms to hundreds of shades of green and there's this undefinable feeling. it's like you don't want to change a channel when you're watching TV because of the great show you're seeing.
they won't sing the songs from the movie, it's not a Hollywood staging. but songs are as catchy as you can sing them after you saw it. it's like a green disco ball at the end of the road where people dance and just have fun. on the other hand, it's also a place where people find answers.

our actors are good storytellers. not to mention under the direction of Ms. Joy Virata who has been given notable recognition after the show. how do i love theater when they bring me back to my childhood?
the show will be running until December so it's also great to see it in the Christmas season. it is at Onstage theater in Greenbelt 1, Makati City.

RepPhils' JEKYLL & HYDE review

i was transported in old London times in Repertory Philippines' Jekyll & Hyde. whereas Jett Pangan plays our lead. he is joined by Junix Inocian as Utterson, Cris Villongco as Emma Carew and Kalila Aguilos as Lucy Harris.
i can that i almost got teary-eyed from what i saw. everything just fell into its place knowing that it was a new treatment. Menchu Lauchengco-Yulo made great direction. she's got a different view on things and it worked well. the stage, is an operating theater and fully functional. it was a park, Jekyll's lab and even the Red Rat without adding so much props.

as i've said before that i really loved the songs. adding with their ala-Sherlock Holmes costumes, got even more romantic. Take Me as I Am, In His Eyes are some songs that you'll probably listen over and over again. but the song, Facade, would struck everyone. the strong interpretation from all of the cast with matching good lighting suggests that every people is hiding evil inside over the good "image" that they project.

and i would applaud for anyone who will play Jekyll/Hyde. congrats to Jett Pangan and Michael Williams for taking the challenge to sing Confrontation -- which is the most difficult song i heard. taking two sides and modulating the voice line after line is not an easy thing to do. Kalila Aguilos sizzled on stage and Cris Villongco uttered the bitchy lines -- haha!

it was a sad ending but all in all, it was a very good show. and i hope everyone will be able to catch it.

catch Repertory Philippines' Jekyll & Hyde starting March 16 to April 15 2012 at Onstage, Greenbelt 1, Makati City. you can check www.repertory.ph or visit their Facebook page @RepPhils.
